The Rotary Club of Tenby sponsors and organises the Annual Young Chefs Competition for zones 1 and 2 of District 1150.
The first round is held at Pembrokeshire College in Haverfordwest. This is followed by district and regional events, both of which took place in Builth Wells this year.
A presentation dinner was held at the Royal Lion Hotel in Tenby recently and the successful student competitors and their lecturers were invited as guests of Tenby Rotary Club.
This year's local winner was Catrin Thomas, of Croesgoch, who is 17 years-old. Catrin won her way through to the next two rounds in Builth Wells, but just failed to make the national final in Cardiff, although she was highly commended.
Two of the three runners-up were 17-year-olds Jenny Owen, of Begelly, and Jack Harding, of Letterston, who both performed very creditably. Unfortunately, Jason Griffiths, of Neyland, was unable to attend, but his framed certificate and prize money was collected by Rose Bulter, lecturer in catering at Pembrokeshire College.
Guest speaker for the successful evening was Chris Osborne, proprietor of the Fourcroft Hotel in Tenby and chairman of Wales Tourism Alliance. Chris spoke with much passion and enthusiasm about cooking and emphasised that there are great opportunities nowadays for young chefs who display flair and energy.
Paul Hudson, director of studies at Pembrokeshire College, responded on behalf of the college and it students. He thanked Tenby Rotary Club for its continued support of the competition, referring to Graham Fry in particular, and also for the excellent meal enjoyed by those present.
