Current Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, is set to serve a second successive term in office.
Publican's wife, Clr. Mrs. Brown was the unanimous choice of fellow councillors to serve as Mayor during Tenby's 600th Charter Year on Tuesday night after she indicated her desire to remain in office for 2002/3.
In time honoured tradition, each councillor was asked in turn if they would like to stand for the position of Mayor, with only Clr. Mrs. Brown indicating that "she would be delighted to put her name forward again."
Her appointment was proposed by Clr. Mickey Folland.
"In the past I have always supported those who are seeking office for the first time. Tonight I am prepared to break with that tradition," he smiled.
"As Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Brown has discharged her duties to an extremely high level of excellence," he continued. "She has been a great ambassador for the town and I know she has been a great help to our clerk, enabling the office to run smoothly.
"It is my honour to propose that Clr. Mrs. Brown remain in office for a second municipal year."
He was seconded by Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward.
"I know Clr. Mrs. Brown has started the ball rolling on a number of projects, particularly for the celebration of the 1402 Charter granting the rights for the burgesses of the town to elect a Mayor, and I know she would like to see them through," she said.
"Above all, I know she will continue to do well in office."
Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter also backed the nomination.
"I think the proposal is admirable and I fully support it," she commented.
Following the unanimous vote, Clr. Mrs. Brown thanked members for their continued support.
Married to Mr. Peter Brown, of Tenby's Prince of Wales public house, 56-year-old Clr. Mrs. Brown has five children.
She first joined Tenby Town Council in 1995 and, in addition to being this year's First Citizen, has been Deputy Mayor and chairman of the town council's gardens committee.
The traditional Mayor-making ceremony will take place on Friday, May 17.
