St. Johns Church last Sunday evening was the venue for our opening concert of the season, the St. David's Day concert.

A chance to shake off the cobwebs and try out one or two songs we had been rehearsing over the winter.

It was our first rendition for instance of an African song Orameejaykajo (I admit to having no idea if that spelling is correct). The audience seemed to enjoy this fast and furious number which we hope will become part of a trilogy of African songs.

We were also able to give the audience their chance to listen to Calon Lan sung properly, unlike some of the attempts on the tv adverts recently. But its great to see the Calon Lan initiative as anything which encourages people to sing and enjoy themselves is welcome, especially lovely Welsh songs such as Calon Lan.

MC Dave Blackmore put the choir on tenterhooks announcing one song, only to have MD Wilbur suggest an alternative which had the advantage of actually being in the programme for the night. But we take it all in our stride, we will sing whatever he announces at the drop of a hat.

It was a good start to what is going to be a very full programme for the year.

We have a short break now until Thursday, March 27, when we will be performing at St. Mary's Church, Tenby, in a joint concert with Tideswell Male Voice Choir from Derbyshire, but of course rehearsals will continue.

We meet every Tuesday and Thursday at the County Club on the Croft at 8 pm.

The choir remains very healthy, with an average attendance at rehearsals of around 30 people.

New members are always welcome though. We are not an 'audition first' choir and anyone can just come along and sit in.

You don't need to read music and you don't even need to sing, but if and when you wish to join in, you can just do so and just join in more as you get to feel comfortable. Other choir members will always give a helping hand.

In previous years we have often been asked to perform at weddings or other functions, but this has not been something which the choir has felt able to commit to very often.

We take our performances very seriously and have wanted to be sure that we could ensure a professional performance for any such engagement when we have such a large concert programme.

I am pleased to announce, however, that the choir has decided to do this as a trial for this season and we have two engagements already.

So if you have a wedding or other event where you feel a Male Voice Choir would add to it, then please contact our secretary, David Stewart-Walvin, on 01834 844926.

We cannot guarantee that we will be able to undertake the event, as we have limited availability, but the more notice you are able to give, the better.

There is also information about the choir on our web site http://www.tenbymalechoir.org">www.tenbymalechoir.org and a Facebook account (just do an internet search for Tenby Male Choir Facebook) or you can get more information on anything about the choir on 01834 813198.
