Saturday saw the first fixture of the New Year for the Tenby Ladies hockey team, played on a windy Thornton pitch. Tenby won the toss and opted to play into the wind. They enjoyed good possession, but unfortunately saw several shots in the opening five minutes go wide of the goal. In the seventh minute, they were finally rewarded when Julie's free hit on the right of the 25 found Katie on the far post and she converted it. Milford are always a tough, physical team and they battled on, being awarded three penalty corners, none of which they could convert into goals. During the last of these, on the stroke of half-time, their frustration was vented as a ball was struck after the whistle, hitting Michelle's knee and forcing her out of the first quarter of the second half. Judy came on for the next period of play and together with Lisa, sweeper Ruth and vigilant 'keeping from Annie, they kept the Milford attack at bay. Sophie, who was substituted earlier after suffering a calf strain, returned to the attack and scored the second goal. Barney won the ball in defence and travelled with it to the halfway line, before passing to Sophie, who outran the Milford defence and slotted the ball smoothly past the helpless goalie. The midfield of Mandy, Mims and Sarah, playing out of her normal position, held firm, passing balls down the left to Rachel and thus ensuring Milford would not score. Tenby squad: Annie Lindsell (capt.), Michelle Johns, Lisa Sheldon, Ruth Ferguson, Miriam Brown, Yvonne Squire, Mandy Lewis, Julie Jones, Sarah Cooper, Sophie Treacy, Katie Tanner, Judy Cokell and Rachel Phillips. Umpires: Angela Miles and Bernie Wheeler. Next fixtures: U18s tournament tomorrow (Saturday) - meet at Pembroke 11.15 am; February 20 - Seniors v Pembroke at Milford.
