Tenby Under 14s played their first game of the season against Pembroke on Sunday at The Clicketts. The boys were obviously raring to go as it was one of the best matches they haver played. Tenby's forwards dominated the match, with the set-piece moves in the scrum and lineout working well. Dylan's hooking was excellent, winning a couple of scrums against the head, while props Ben P and Wesley caused the Pembroke front row all sorts of trouble. Clearing out at the rucks was superb, with the forward pack looking fitter than ever, getting to the breakdown ahead of their counterparts time and again. James and Matthew both had great games using their strength, always going forward with the ball and proving tricky for the opposition to get down. The backs, while not getting the ball as often as they would have liked, kept their defensive line well and made great use of the ball when they got it; Elliot and Jake regularly crossing the gain line ably supported by their wingers and fullback. The tries were scored by Joe Dennis, Matthew Lewis, who got a deserved brace, and Dylan Griffin, who got a great forward's try. Joe converted two of the four tries. Well done to the boys and to new coach Dave! Tenby fielded: Wesley Bonser, Dylan Griffin, Ben Prestwich, James Oakley, Henry Whittaker, Matthew Lewis, Jack Butler, Rob Luly, Joe Dennis, Jake Proctor, Elliot Randel, Dominic Hicks, Ben Thomas, Luke Brolin, Luke Hicks. Subs - Andrew Murphy, Henry Pritchard Jones.
Tenby U10s 10 pts. Pembroke U10s nil
Tenby U10s travelled to Pembroke for their first game of the season. From the kick-off, Tenby knew they were going to be in for a tough game, with all the early pressure coming from Pembroke. However, some determined tackling and good spoiling work at the breakdown prevented the home team from scoring. As the game continued, it became evident that both teams were very evenly matched; with breaks from each team being snuffed out by the opposition. At the turn-around, with no scores on the board, Tenby were told to go out and continue the good work from the first half, but try to get a bit more width on the ball. Unfortunately, this didn't quite happen, with the forwards on occasions a little too eager to pick the ball up, rather than clear out the rucks. Nevertheless, in the second half, the forwards looked tighter and more organised, using the rolling maul to good use. After a period of prolonged pressure, with Jordan, Sean and Max repeatedly 'picking and driving', Ryan spotted a gap and powered over the whitewash for Tenby's opening try. From the restart, and with the clock ticking down, Donovan spotted a gap and jinked his way up the pitch, before being tackled 10 metres short of the line, but Jacob was on hand to collect the ball and power over for Tenby's second try. Well done to all the team; this was an excellent start to the season. With the squad now bolstered by a number of new players, there should be plenty of competition for places this year. Tenby fielded: Jacob Knox (capt.), Donovan Griffin, Tom Kinnear, Jamie Lewis, Harry Vickery, Edward Hurle, Harry Goforth, Owen Davies, Max Sarrionandia, Sean Webb, Aaron Lloyd, Jordan, Aaron, Ryan, Lewis.
Tenby Under 9s 8 tries PEMBROKE UNDER 9s 3
Tenby United Under 9s travelled to a rainy Pembroke on Sunday, playing their first game of the season and first game of full contact. Pembroke kicked-off and immediately both teams put in some good tackles. The game started tightly, with neither team giving anything away, but eventually the ball found its way to Ben Palin, who took off down the wing for Tenby's first try. Pembroke replied quickly with a try of their own, before Tenby went ahead again through the good work of Danny Wainwright, sliding in at the corner. Once again, though, Pembroke equalled Tenby from a convincing run through the middle. Both teams were working hard, with some big hits coming in from Jack Broadhurst and Ryan Cole, and gutsy defence work from Toby Poole, Jack Cummins and Jacob Thomas in and around the rucks. Tenby scored twice more before the break, with Jack Broadhurst smashing his way through for two well-deserved tries. Pembroke added a try to leave it 4-3 to Tenby at half-time. Tenby kicked-off the second half and immediately took control, with Tom Murphy powering his way down the wing in no time at all for a great individual try. Any attacks from Pembroke were very brief as Tenby tackled anything that moved and retrieved the ball successfully. Another brace of tries from the visitors followed shortly after when Jack Tucker and Ryan Cole, respectively, burst through the defence of Pembroke to place the ball down. Full credit to Pembroke, they fought to the end, but could not match Tenby's fluent rugby. With just seconds to go until full-time, Jac Waters sidestepped his way past the defenders to touch down for the final try of the game and Tenby's eighth. The game ended Pembroke three tries, Tenby eight tries. Many thanks to Carl Wainwright for coaching the boys. Keep it up boys! Tenby side: Toby Poole, Jack Cummins, Jacob Thomas, Ben Palin, Danny Wainwright, Jack Broadhurst, Tom Murphy, Jack Tucker, Jac Waters and Ryan Cole.
