Two Tenby seafront hotels and Saundersfoot village were back amongst the prizes at the Wales in Bloom awards ceremony this month, which returned after a hiatus over the pandemic.
The popular competition returned with an event in Beaumaris, Anglesey on (September 10), recognising those that took part, with Wales the only region or nation in the UK to hold an in person awards ceremony this year.
Competing in the ‘Best Hotel Front’ category, Tenby’s Giltar and Atlantic hotels, both situated along The Esplanade overlooking the South Beach, were awarded Gold and joint first place.
It’s a real family affair too at both hotels, as keeping the Giltar’s floral credentials in check is Simon Rowlands, with his two sons George and Tobin tasked with the duty at the Atlantic!
Malcolm Brace, owner of the Giltar Hotel said that the premises was once again ‘delighted’ to receive the accolade.
“We’re again extremely proud and pleased of the award, which is down to the continued efforts of Simon and Tobin making the place look great,” he remarked, with Tobin adding: “It was wonderfully kind to be awarded joint winners. All I am planning to do is to get back to the garden!”
Nicky Rees of the Atlantic Hotel also welcomed their recognition and praised their gardening team, stating: “So delighted to win Gold again at the Wales in Bloom Awards in Beaumaris.????
“A huge thank you to our gardener George for his dedication and hard work, especially throughout these past 18 months.
“He, with the help of his brother Tobin, has ensured that our gardens and terraces are as beautiful as ever and continue to flourish all year round.”
George commented: “We are pleased to win gold. The guests, visitors and locals all enjoy our displays.”
Meanwhile, Saundersfoot was one of only four large villages in Wales to take the coveted gold in its category.
A spokesperson for Saundersfoot Community Council said: “Grateful thanks are accorded to Councillor Martyn Williams BEM for overseeing the works in the Sensory Garden; to Saundersfoot in Bloom for the flower planter displays; and to all the business owners for the colourful displays around the village and surrounding areas.”
Wales in Bloom Chair, Peter Barton-Price said the ceremony was celebration for the nation, stating: “You are all winners and Wales is a winner!
“We saw some outstanding displays that are enjoyed by participants, locals and visitor, really making Wales a beautiful place to work, live and visit.
“Each and every one of you are making communities grow. Above all being part of the ‘Bloom’ family and making Wales more beautiful each year is the biggest reward I could have.”
