Talented Tenby golfer John Morris celebrated a rare double last weekend. For, as well as claiming the coveted Cobb Cup, he also landed the Regimental Bowl in the Tenby club's annual 36-hole strokeplay championship. In doing so, he joined an elite band of golfers who have achieved the feat in the long history of the competition, including Steve Sutcliffe and John Dinsdale, who were joint winners in 1970, Barry Smith in 1971 and 1972, Ian Duffy in 1973, Kim Beynon in 1978, Paul Haley in 1993 and, most recently, Chris Hill in 2000. John, in fact, has now won the Cobb Cup (for best gross) no fewer than five times, as well as picking up the Regimental Bowl (best nett) on two occasions, but this was the first time he had bagged them both. And he did so in some style, as he left his challengers trailing way back in his wake. Despite the testing conditions, which saw a near gale force wind sweeping across the course, John, playing off a handicap of one, was in excellent form in the morning as he posted a fine score of 70 - the only par round of the day. And with the two new holes at Giltar in play for the first time in this competition, it could be said that that score is now a new course record! Not surprisingly, considering the conditions, the round was good enough to see him holding a five- shot cushion at the lunch break, with his nearest rival, Brian Cramb, having returned a score of 75, with two others, Matthew Moseley and John Gottwaltz, a shot back on 76. John could not quite sustain the same form in the afternoon, but a solid 77 was still the best of the second 18, only being matched by Cramb, with Moseley and Gottwaltz falling further adrift with scores of 81. It left John a clear five-shot winner in the Cobb Cup, while his nearest challenger for the Regimental Bowl was four-handicapper, Matthew Moseley, who was four shots behind. A total of 31 competitors took part in the event, with standard scratch for the morning round being 73, while in the afternoon that figure rose to 75. As well as collecting the silverware, John Morris received a total of £100 in prize money as well as a handicap cut - he will now be playing off scratch. Leading scores in the two competitions were: Cobb Cup: John Morris 70-77-147 (cup and £50); Brian Cramb 75-77-152 (£25); Matthew Moseley 76-81-157 (£15); John Gottwaltz 76-81-157 (£10); Chris Thompson 80-79-159 (£8). Regimental Bowl: John Morris 69-76-145 (bowl and £50); Matthew Moseley 72-77-149 (£25); Brian Cramb 74-76-150 (£15); John Gottwaltz 73-78 -151 (£10); Phillip Rees 76-76-152 (£8). Twos: Martin Neilan, Michael Anthony, Chris Davies, Ian Thomas (£16 each).
