Quite a stiff breeze and a quick scud of rain welcomed the Trefloyne seniors to Tenby. They were looking to repeat the win made last season on their track.

But Tenby senior's captain Ken Gouldsbrough had a trick or two up his sleeve, and the best one was choosing a partner to end his losing spell.

Vince Shaw drew the straw, and provided the rest of the Tenby team with a breathing space!

But they didn't have it all their own way against Trefloyne captain Ivan Kirk, and his partner Terry Morgan. Going three down at one stage, the Trefloyne pair got their act together and pulled back to all square, but then Ken's ploy kicked into gear, and both he and Vince started to pull away again and finalise the game on the 15th green. It looks like Vince could now claim the regular No 1 spot on his own now, but wait - I hear an emphatic no! But it was a good win nevertheless, and as long as Ken has rediscovered his winning ways, then it bodes well for the rest of the season.

"A fair tonking," said Roger Cryer, as he and squadron leader David Owen went down to a decidedly in-form Malcolm Arlott and me. Malcolm used his shot holes to very good effect, and coupled with my own three chip ins, we managed to call it a day on the 13th.

"We were flying quite well for two holes," said David, and with a rueful look upon his face, Roger looked as though he thoroughly agreed with the sentiments.

Geof Aston and Peter Hart thought that John Bancroft and Peter Scourfield were a little closer to heavenly golf than they were, and conceded that the Trefloyne pair played very consistently as a pairing. But to take this couple to the 17th was a credit, as John and Peter have some reputation.

Continuing his winning ways from the senior trip to the Grove, Stan Hudson along with partner Des Stone, stormed to a 5 and 4 win over John Smith and Brian Norman. The Trefloyne pair could be excused for thinking that they had at least wrapped up the 13th hole with a birdie, but then Stan chipped in with his own birdie for the half. The life seemed to go out of the visitors at that point!

Tony Morris and Colin Griffith had an interesting game of golf against Walter Witts and Denis Busby.

"Not especially awe inspiring," said Colin, "as I am not match fit, but at least I won the bye on the 18th." This game can be cruel at times.

A very difficult pair to beat according to Bob Storey, as he and David Rees thankfully shook hands on the 17th with John James and Bernard Bradley, after a bit of a battle on the greens, and following closely behind were Hywel Probert and Clifton John, who had a fine win over Royston Kemp and John Shepherd. Hywel had a 39 on his outward half that set the seal on some solid play between him and Clifton. But they couldn't let their guard down for one minute against the Trefloyne two.

"Nip and tuck all the way," said Roy Morgan, as he and Maurice Lewis took the pairing of Graham Harrison and John Cliff to the 18th. But unfortunately, a par was not enough to hold off the Trefloyne lads, and the 1 up lead taken on the 17th stayed as was.

Another very solid partnership was forged between Jim Martin and Derek Bath, as they gave a lesson to Garfield Price and John Crosby.

"I know how to pick my partner," said Jim, and Derek was going to resist all attempts at being dope tested. Sounds like a cracking game.

Finally, Tony Morgan and Tony Ranoe were called in as last minute replacements, against George King and Clive John. What a team they made as well, as never being more than one hole in it for most of the way, their "local knowledge was the key to success," said George, "but they were very nice about their win," he acknowledged with a hint of a wry smile.

Ken Gouldsbrough (seen right with Ivan Kirk) was understandably pleased about his teams convincing win, and said that he would keep his speech short, as the Trefloyne men had a long way to go home!

He also accepted the applause that came with his announcement of his own win, but insisted on keeping his next partners identity secret. That brought a few pains on!

Ivan Kirk replied by thanking Ken and Tenby for the day, and also thanked the caterers for the match meal, and congratulated the green staff on the course condition. The greens were superb.
