First time win in schools competition

The last session of the Golf Foundation was a great success with competitions galore! Team games and chipping skills were par for the day - with lots of prizes handed out!

The first groups who played target golf did really well - Bethany Duckworth, Jack Merrony, Elliot Ronowitz, Megan Macro, Leo Davies, Georgia Williams, Bronwen Thomas, Ollie Worley, Dan Hawkey and George won the team competition; Sam Turton, David Webb, Elliot Scotcher, Ollie Worley, Claudette Pouton, Jack Murphy, James Regimbal, Jack G and Hugo Wellum were the individual winners.

A special mention to Sam Butler and Elliot Ronowitz who both played some excellent target shots, as did Sam Morgan who at the moment is playing golf to die for!

Our Junior captain, Oliver, was down to help and had the rangers competing on the chipping green. Emma G and Ollie were the two most outstanding players and the girls hammered the boys in the team competition.

With Ian, Greg Palin and Jack Murphy stole the show! In fact, the junior organiser was trying to get tips off them for his game on Sunday. Sophie John was also another star, hitting the green consistently.

There will be no Saturday golf through the summer because Julia wants a holiday! We will start Golf Foundation again in September.

In the meantime, all you young golfers could now apply. You have had lessons with the pro, book some individual lessons and let's see you competing on a Sunday in the competitions. There are a number of you out there, course fit, who could start winning some prizes! Fill in the forms and either send them back to me or put them in my pigeon hole in the club.

Sunday saw a small entry due to work commitments. Rachel Scourfield was the overall winner and David Schooling came in second. Dan Cope was the winner off the whites and Sophie John won off the blacks.

Congratulations to Tenby Greenhill golf team, Oliver Duckett, Paul Heywood, Niclas Thomas, Dan Cope and David Ayers, who won the Pembrokeshire schools competition on Monday with an eight-point lead. This is the first time ever, and no doubt not the last.

Remember that it is Junior Captain's Day on August 10 and the junior captain Oliver is inviting everyone to his day -gifts and prizes for all who play. Let us support our captain and I'm sure we will have a good day out! Sign up on the board.

200 Club

The draw for May, June and July took place recently on the evening of Captain's Day, and with £900 in prizes to be given away, excitement mounted in the gathering of over 100 members.

The lucky winners are as follows:

May - 1. Joan Pugh; 2. Howard Griffiths; 3. John and Mary Williams.

June - 1. Fred Wilks; 2. Simon Welch; 3. Pat Fox.

July - 1. Joan Pugh; 2. Dudley Williams; 3. Russell Clarke.

The coincidence of Joan Pugh winning twice in three months (she was also a winner in December 2000) produced the inevitable responses, as did the last name out of the hat, club captain Russell Clarke, winning his first prize since the 200 Club started in January 2000 and on Captain's Day at that.

New members are welcomed. Easy to complete applications are always available from the captain or manager's office.

Handsome victory

The inaugural inter-county Dyfed v Glamorgan Seniors match took place on the Tenby golf links on July 11.

The wind blew hard all day, making it a severe test for the golfers, all of whom were playing off low handicaps.

Each team comprised eight player, and the Dyfed team included four Tenby golfers, Brian Cramb, Bob Follon, John Gottwaltz and Roy Howell. They all performed admirably, thus helping Dyfed to a handsome victory 6.5 to 1.5.

Judging by the success of this event, other fixtures will be set up, including a possible North Wales v South Wales match.

Tenby's title charge still on track

On Sunday, the Dyfed League team from Carmarthen arrived at Tenby seeking revenge for their shock 7-2 home defeat earlier in the season.

Early indications on the course were that they might just return the favour and take the steam out of Tenby's charge at the title of 'Dyfed League Champions - A Division 2001'.Their top pairs were passing the lower order pairings holding up three or four fingers to their team-mates, indicating comfortable leads.

Fortunately for Tenby, the team has strength in depth, and although the first, second and fourth pairings all lost, the rest of the team came in with hard fought victories to take the fixture six matches to three.

Some of the regular low handicap team members were not available for this match, and Tenby fielded a number of players who, despite regular appearances in previous years, had not played for the team this season until the Carmarthen fixture.

The players in this category who all won their respective games, and to whom a special thank you and well done is owed, are David Douglas Law, Steve Evans, Gareth Rees and Rob Hall. Well done Richard Morton, a junior playing his first Dyfed League match and displaying good golfing skills to carry his partner to victory.

Results of the games were as follows: Brian Cramb and Phil Rees lost 5 and 4; Anthony Hall and Dean Kennett lost 3 and 1; Gareth Powell and Kenny Breaker won 1 up; Jamie Preston and Nick Rogers lost 5 and 4; Peter Hughes and David Douglas Law won 1 up; Matt Brown and Martin Creese won 3 and 2; Loz Phillips and Richard Morton won 4 and 3; Alan Morton and Steve Evans won 6 and 5; Gareth Rees and Rob Hall won 1 up.

After five matches, Tenby are in second place in the table behind Newport, Pembs., but with two games in hand.

The real duel will probably be played out between Tenby and Ashburnham for the title, and the fixture between the two on August 19 could well be the championship decider.

Well played Tenby, and a big thank you to all who have played for the team this year, and all those who have made themselves available, but have not yet made the side.
