Brian swings to shield success - again

The Saturday Swingers held their finals day at Tenby Golf Club last Saturday. Forty-one Swingers took part in the 18-hole stableford competition, competing for the Swingers' Annual Golf Shield.

The course was in excellent condition and this was reflected in the very high scores.

The winner for the second year running and for the third time in six years was Brian Diment with an excellent score of 39 points. Mind you, he took a week's holiday to prepare for the event!

In second place was Bill Davies with 37 points, beating Dai Thomas and John Stenson on the back nine.

Leading scores were as follows: Brian Diment 39 pts; Bill Davies, Dai Thomas, John Stenson 37; Martin Creese, Peter Rossi, Colin Murphy, Peter James 35; Paul Heywood, Gary McNeilly, Paul Hoyland, Simon Toy 34; Peter Jenkins, Martin Morris 33.

During the year, the Swingers also compete for the Ralph and Phil John Shield, the trophy being awarded to the player with the 12 best medal rounds.

The winner was Ralph John for the second time, with Gary Willars in second place.

Later in the evening, the Swingers sat down to a meal in the club. Chairman Dai presented the prizes and was in his usual top form. Dai presented Roger Schooling with a donation towards the Juniors funds.

The Swingers are greatly indebted to chairman Dai, treasurer Jeff and the rest of the committee for all their hard work, but without Eamonn Maher the society would not be organised. Every Saturday he is first out and last to leave with all the scores. Thank you Eamonn.

A thank you also to Roger, Ria and Sandra for their hospitality throughout the year and the excellent meal on the night.

For me, it was great to see John Morris drinking in the clubhouse again. Get well soon John.

The Swingers' next main event will be the Irish Tour from September 13-16. All monies should now have been paid.

A new season starts next Saturday. Eamonn will be after your subs, which are unchanged.

Stunning results in

July Junior Medal

The Junior Rangers were out in force yet again, taking over the practice ground in order to improve and better their swing and chipping techniques!

The club captain came down and passed on some of his expert advice to some of the newer players, who were eager to show him how much they had developed.

With coaching from Simon on the chipping green, the 12 youngsters were given a lot of individual attention, which enabled them to produce some fine shots - shots I'm sure Tiger Woods would be impressed with!

The session finished with a mini competition, Tiger Woods v Ian Woosnam. With five in each team, the groups had to score as many points as possible to win. Tiger Woods' team, consisting of Leo Moreland, Georgia Williams, Sam Butler, Dan Hawkey and Jack G, were the eventual winners, who also managed to improve on their first time score.

On the chipping green, things were very evenly matched, with most of the rangers scoring 30 points. Leo, however, scored his by getting close to the flag each time. Joe Scourfield, a new recruit, was the overall winner with a score of 35. Jason Regimbal came with Joe and considering it was their first session they played some excellent shots and we look forward to them starting with us in earnest for Golf Foundation.

Toby Rossiter, Greg Palin, Emma Guerreiro and Shelby Rossiter were the stars around the chipping green. They worked with the pro, Mark, and showed great talent around the green.

In the competition games with Mary and Gill, Jack Murphy played some amazing golf and proved to be the outright winner in his group, with Toby and Elliot Ronowitz taking second and third position, respectively.

The second team nearly doubled their scoring, with Sam Turton storming into the lead, scoring two 50 points on the way. Shelby took second place, with Greg third.

The Medal on Sunday saw a great deal of young golfers eager to get out on the course. The weather stayed on everybody's side and some excellent scores were returned.

The overall winner was Dan Cope with nett 65. The winner off the yellow tees was David Schooling, who has now been cut to 24 after his performance over the last two weeks. Rachel Scourfield won off the red boxes with an excellent nett score and Emma Guerreiro won off the black boxes.

It was great to see the young girls out and a big thank you to Pat Fox for walking round with them and giving them lots of encouragement.

Practice tomorrow (saturday) will be 9 - 10 am and 10 - 11 am as normal. Sunday's competition is up on the board, so please sign up.

Ladies' Section

The fine weather and excellent condition of the course has resulted in large entries for the ladies' weekly competitions.

The June LGU medal was won by Paula Morgan with a nett 70 on the last nine from Sam Morgan. It is good to see one of our newer members managing to get to grips with a championships course. Third in the competition was Margaret Canning on 71, also on the last nine from Lindsay Moran - she, too, is a newer member, so those of us who should know our way round the course by now must look to our laurels!

Another newer member, but one who features regularly in the ladies' and junior competitions, is Holly Watkins and she won the Silver division of the Jane Davies-Hughes trophies with a decisive nett 68 from Heather Morgan on 71. The Bronze division was won by Mary Rowell on the last nine from Julie Jenkins with nett 73.

Each year the ladies support the RNLI with a stableford competition and this year it was won by Ann Blackmore with 41 points, from Julia Sweet on 40 and Ann Follon on 35. This year £42 was raised.

Away from Tenby, the Three Counties League teams visited Glynhir on probably the hottest day of the year so far and both teams were unable to cope with the Glynhir weather or their ladies and we lost our 100 per cent match success in both sections.

Our next match is against Newport next week at home and we are hoping that local knowledge and cooler weather will get us back on the winning trail.

The Copper division recently visited Priskilly and had a most enjoyable day with competitions over nine and 18 holes for various handicap categories, and the winners included Ruth Harvey, Judy Lewis, Ann Badham, Ann Thomas-Ferrand, Senga Waddilove, Ann Dasson and Kay Duffy.

Everyone was most appreciative of the organisation of the day by Rita Collins and for the support of the captain, Ann Mardsen, who presented the prizes.
