TENBY U13s 24

A full strength Tenby side met an under-strength Saundersfoot in their return league game.

The Tenby and Saundersfoot Lions sponsored Tenby side fielded David Saunders, happily restored from injury, and ace marksman David Jones, fresh from hospital due to recurrence of a nasty hand injury.

David Jones was quickly into the fray with some lovely touch football.

The heavy underfoot conditions were hampering the Tenby cause in the early exchanges. Ashley Prior was denied by the alert Saundersfoot 'keeper, James Phillips, following neat interplay by Matt Fleming and David Jones.

Ashley opened his account, however, slotting home from an Ashley Murdoch header.

After dogged Saundersfoot defence kept Tenby at bay, David Jones enjoyed an easy 'tap in' when the ball squirted free under the diving goalkeeper.

Ashley Murdoch, following-up well, netted Tenby's third.

The floodgates appeared to be opening when Ashley Prior ran from halfway to lob the 'keeper for Tenby's fourth and slotted a further goal for their fifth.

A strong run from Oliver Morgan saw Ashley Prior fire in, only to be denied by determined Saundersfoot defence.

Ashley Prior, however, banged another in for Tenby's sixth.

Oliver Morgan walked in Tenby's seventh and the Saundersfoot 'keeper berated his defence.

Good following up from Jack Lawrence registered Tenby's eighth after Matt Fleming hit the crossbar.

A pass on the turn from Jack, and quick feet from David and Matt Fleming engineered a simple opportunity for Matthew Jones which he tucked away with aplomb.

Ashley Prior struck again for Tenby's 10th and Damian Walters fed David Jones who rounded the 'keeper with exquisite footwork to crash the ball home.

From an Oliver Morgan corner, 'Ginger' banged in his 12th - a distinct lack of festive charity on Tenby's behalf.

Damian Walters pounced on a half-chance for Tenby's 13th.

Tenby's defence of Ben Messenger and David Saunders were largely untroubled, but Saundersfoot kept battling, with the beleaguered 'keeper doing his utmost to stem the tide.

Half-time score: Saundersfoot 0 Tenby 13.

Tenby, playing up the slope in the second half, were soon on the offensive, and after some pin-ball in the penalty area, someone, probably Ashley Murdoch, scored.

Then Ginger struck for Tenby's 15th with a shot which gave the 'keeper no chance.

Ieuaun Rowell came on for Oliver Morgan and with Tenby ball watching Saundersfoot worked an opening down their right, but frustratingly the ball went wide, Tenby clearing from the resultant corner.

James Phillips again denied Matt Fleming from point blank range, but Matthew did open his account with a coolly taken goal. Both David Saunders and Ben Messenger played some fine through balls, enabling the Tenby attack to capitalise.

Matthew Fleming blasted in Tenby's 17th and a flighted clearance from Ieuan saw Ginger claim Tenby's 18th as frostbite set in.

Ginger netted again following tenacious work from Ashley Murdoch.

David Jones struck for the 'score' for Tenby as the sun came out.

Brave Saundersfoot, who had been living on scraps, continued to battle bravely for possession.

Ginger added another and Jack Lawrence, following up superbly, stabbed in for two little ducks.

Matthew Fleming rounded the Saundersfoot defence, firing high for 23. Credit to Saundersfoot for never giving up.

David Jones scored number 24 just before the final whistle.

Tenby team: Danny Harries, David Saunders, Ben Messenger, Oliver Morgan (capt.), Damian Walters, Matthew Fleming, Jack Lawrence, Matthew Jones, Ashley Murdoch, Ashley Prior, David Jones, Ieuan Rowell.

MONKTON SWIFTS 3

The table-topping Lewis, Lewis and Co. Solicitors sponsored Tenby Under 16s entertained second placed Monkton Swifts at the Clicketts last Saturday.

There was nothing between the two sides for the opening half-hour until an uncharacteristic 'Barthez' error by Tenby goalkeeper Chris Iddon gave Matthew Skeels an easy tap in.

Tenby almost equalised on the stroke of half-time when a free-kick by Tenby's captain, David Day, crashed against the crossbar.

The second-half was similar to the first, with both sides playing good football and a credit to Pembrokeshire.

Matthew Skeels doubled the Swifts' lead midway through the half when an innocuous shot deceived Iddon.

At the other end, Tom Page hit a marvellous volley which Mark Williams, in the Monkton goal, did very well to push over the bar.

However, Page got his just rewards when he latched on to a through ball to round Williams to score and bring the Seasiders back into the game.

Monkton then had their best period of the match, which Tenby did well to defend with a little help from the woodwork - twice. A badly timed tackle by Day resulted in Richard Hughes having to leave the field. Then deep into injury time Skeels was given far too much room and put the match beyond Tenby's reach.

This result sees the two sides exchange places in the league table.

Tenby fielded: C. Iddon, T. Hilling, S. Smith, D. Taylor, S. Hilling, P. Broadhurst, D. Day, D. Cope, D. Otton, J. Christopher, T. Page, M. Birch.

CLARBESTON ROAD U12s 3

TENBY U12s 2

Tenby's Picnic Basket sponsored Under 12s met Clarbeston Road in the second round of the League Cup.

Tenby's makeshift defence was put under immediate pressure and only a number of bad misses, desperate tackles and good saves from stand-in goalkeeper Scott Helmich kept the visitors on terms.

However, in the middle of the first-half Clarbeston's enthusiasm to attack at all times was punished, when Sam Christopher beat the offside flag to put the visitors 1-0 ahead with a fine individual goal.

This unexpected advantage raised the hope of the visitors and they began to show something of their true form, although the mobile Clarbeston attackers were giving continual problems in the heart of the Tenby defence.

Just on half-time, the home side equalised from close range to set up a challenge for both teams for the second-half.

In the second-half, Tenby used their left side much better, with Gavin Kinsey getting Guto Griffiths past the home defence in menacing fashion. Billy Vaughan and Aaron Goldsmith showed flashes of their usual form in the midfield, but neither could deliver the through pass which would have given Sam Christopher the run at the Clarbeston goal which Tenby needed.

Tenby, however, were working harder to get their passing game together and looked more in control in the middle of the second-half.

Following another wing movement on the left, Gavin Kinsey scored a stunning goal from a difficult angle to give Tenby a 2-1 lead.

This should have been added to shortly afterwards following a scramble in the home goal, but Clarbeston, sensing that the match was slipping away, put everything into attacking movements, which Scott Helmich did well to deal with, until a run through the middle brought the match to 2-2.

Both sides tried hard for the winner, and the defences packed both goals, making scoring look difficult. Following a corner, a packed Tenby defence was stunned when Clarbeston scored the winner in the last minute with a 20-yard drive to take the match with the best goal of the game.

Team: Scott Helmich, Jamie Robins, Joe Scourfield, Aaron Goldsmith, Jordan Lloyd, Billy Vaughan, Adam Johns, Guto Griffiths, Gavin Kinsey, Sam Christopher, Joe Lewis, Richard Jones.
