MERLINS BRIDGE 0

TENBY 2

Three points meant a top of the league placement. This proved enough incentive to hassle Merlins Bridge off every ball and grab a well deserved 2-0 victory.

The first goal came through a tremendous build-up in which right-back Dylan Lawrence sent fledgling James Brown down the line to centre for Gavin Scotcher to hit a half-volley from 30 yards (one down 19 to go).

Early in the second-half, with one of the best pieces of football played by the Seasiders to date, Deryn Brace came very close to slipping in a diving header at the far post, to give its just rewards.

Tenby soon sealed their victory when after a goalmouth scramble, in which 'The Bridge' felt the Tenby centre-back was offside, Dave Meyrick bicycle kicked, No! scissor kicked, No! toe-poked into the back of the home side's net.

Tenby didn't squander their lead and worked hard to keep captain Dewi Davies untroubled as the last line of defence.

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees a home fixture against St. Clears.

CAMROSE 0

TENBY 4

This was an honest performance from a hard working Tenby side. Camrose weren't given a second on the ball for the majority of the game, and with so much possession, this time Tenby didn't fail to score.

It was a full strength Camrose side that started the game and with a 1-1 result at Camrose and Tenby minus a few regulars, the home side were geared up for a battle against this very physical side.

From the whistle, Tenby hunted down possession and this gave 'centre' men 'Tenby' Griffiths and Deryn Brace a lot to work with. Both men performed and constantly put their forwards into the game. The wing pairing of Ryan Lawrence and Jimmy 'Man of the Match' Thomas worked tirelessly and deserved their praise.

The first goal came from a period of sustained pressure in which Thomas attacked his right corner and slotted a neat ball into the middle, where everyone hesitated, except Deryn Brace who threw himself forward to head home.

The Seasiders didn't expect to find themselves in front so quickly, but they weren't going to make the same mistake they had at Camrose. Every player battled hard and the back four of Finlay, Meyrick, Lawrence and James weren't in the mood to let anything past and 'keeper Dewi Davies was seldom troubled.

Helmich wasn't just going to sit back and keep things tight; his overlapping runs paid off and twice he was on hand to cleanly strike quality shots past the somewhat despondent 'keeper - two well deserved goals for the boy.

This wasn't going to be Camrose's day and they took another major blow when Ryan Lawrence sent an in-swinging corner kick into the back of the visitors' net. Lawrence has scored a number of quality goals this season and this was no exception. The lethargic striker must be the goal of the season candidate for Tenby so far.

LADIES FOOTBALL

Tenby's Famous £1 Shop sponsored Tenby Ladies fielded two teams in the Indoor League at Bush Sports Centre, Pembroke, with a goal by Tracey Parks proving decisive in a win for the 'B' team.

Tenby B 0 Goodwick B 2: Two second half goals gave Goodwick the points, after a spirited display by Tenby just failed to contain their opponents and keep a clean sheet. Good tackling by Hazel Sawyer and Ani Nicholls won the ball back repeatedly to supply Cally Roberts with some through passes which she bravely chased, but could not open the score for Tenby.

Tenby B 1 Saundersfoot B 0: Tenby B built on their first game, with a goal from Tracey Parks getting the points for her team. Saundersfoot fought back bravely and soaked up a lot of pressure near to their goal. Tenby began to get into the best form with all their players winning their tackles and passing the ball well, but they could not add to the score.

Tenby A O Haverfordwest A 2: Tenby started well with some crisp passing movements, but a defensive error on the right allowed Haverfordwest to go into an undeserved lead. Carrie Slack used the ball well and Sally James showed the usual covering ability to allow Imelde Rossi to attack down the left and put pressure on the Haverfordwest defence. Midway in the second half, Jane Lovegrove seized on more indecision in the Tenby defence and hit in a low shot to put her team 2-0 ahead. Nicola Aston tried hard in the later stages of the game to pull a goal back for her team without any luck.

Tenby A - Denise Powell, Carrie Slack, Nicola Aston, Sally James, Imelde Rossi.

Tenby B - Angela Nicholls, Hazel Sawyer, Tracy Parks, Cally Roberts, Ani Nicholls.

GIRLS FOOTBALL

Table-topping Tenby Under 12s A team met Goodwick in their first match. They won 5-0, with goals coming from Nikki Furlong 2 and Jenna Wright 3. Victoria Brace played well in goal, Danielle Jones and Jade Manning controlled the midfield and Joanna Rowe looked solid at the back.

Their second game was against Saundersfoot. They scored four goals in the first half through Victoria, Nikki 2 and Danielle. Jade went in goal and was replaced by Danielle in the second half. Joanne and Jade passed the ball well, but Saundersfoot defended strongly in the second half, to leave the final score at 4-0.

Squad: Nikki Furlong (capt), Jade Manning, Jenna Wright, Danielle Jones, Joanna Rowe, Victoria Brace.

The U12 Tenby B team fielded Elena Chicotti as goalkeeper, Becka Mearns in defence, Holly Cloake in midfield, with Bethan Roberts and Gracie Bevan up front against Goodwick in their first match.

After one minute, Holly secured a superb goal, but Goodwick retaliated with two quick goals, one after another, in the next two minutes.

Elena managed to save a superb shot at goal after another four minutes by the Goodwick forwards.

Gracie had a superb shot at goal after taking the ball down the left wing and striking it cleanly at the goalkeeper. Unluckily for Gracie, the goalkeeper was quick to the ball and defended the shot.

Sophie Rees played very well in defence, but unfortunately in the second-half Goodwick scored a quick goal in the first minute.

In the second-half, Becka played in goal, Nia Thomas and Bethan Roberts up front, Elena midfield and Holly in defence.

Becka had two brilliant goal attempts saved, which narrowed down Goodwick's win to 3-1.

Tenby Bs next met Neyland Athletic. The girls by this time had woken up and played well together, rather than trying to take on their opponents individually. Sophie played in goal along with Gracie in the second-half and both 'keepers had some superb saves.

Holly played midfield, with Nia and Bethan up front. Becka played in defence.

Holly scored with two superb shots at goal after taking the ball from midfield and passing the defence easily. They came in the third and fourth minutes of the second-half.

Final score was a 2-0 win for Tenby Bs.

Well done girls, as the weeks go on we're working more as a team. A few more greens in your Sunday lunch to get a bit taller girls, and we'll be even higher up in the league. At present, we are third.

Many thanks to parents for help with transport and their support, and the referees who officiated at the matches. Next game will be this Sunday.

B team: Sophie Rees, Becka Mearns, Holly Cloake, Elena Chicotti, Nia Thomas, Gracie Bevan and Bethan Roberts.

MILFORD ATH. 2

Tenby's Picnic Basket sponsored Under 12s faced Milford Athletic, venturing into new territory.

On a sloping, muddy pitch, Tenby started off nervously and both sides had chances to score.

Sam Christopher, playing his best ever game, opened the scoring after Adam Johns had put through a perfect pass.

Guto Griffiths, Tenby's other front player, scored the first of his five-goal tally, after a superb lob by captain Billy Vaughan. Griffiths scored twice more before half-time.

Jordan Lloyd was playing well until a nasty knock on the ankle forced him to be replaced by Luke Dedman at half-time.

Dedman scored with his first touch of the ball after a good run down the right flank.

Milford pulled a goal back after too many Tenby players pushed up, only to see Christopher take the score to 6-1.

Griffiths added a fourth and fifth, both well worked moves involving several players.

Scott Helmich scored an individual goal, netting after his original shot was blocked by the 'keeper, and Vaughan scored a well-deserved final goal, after an excellent goal from an early free-kick was disallowed and had to be re-taken.

Milford scored another consolation goal, making the final score 10-2 to Tenby.

Richard Thomas played well in goal and dominated the 18-yard box.

Joe Scourfield and Richard Jones defended well, while as usual, Aaron Goldsmith worked tirelessly all over the pitch. Adam and Billy controlled the midfield, with Gavin Kinsey playing an important roll on the left side of the park.

This was a good team performance in a match played in difficult conditions.

Thanks to all the loyal supporters.

Squad: Richard Thomas, Richard Jones, Scott Helmich, Luke Dedman, Adam Johns, Joe Scourfield, Sam Christopher, Billy Vaughan (capt), Gavin Kinsey, Guto Griffiths, Aaron Goldsmith, Jordan Lloyd.

TENBY U16s 9 HUNDLETON U16s 0

The Lewis, Lewis and Co., Solicitors, sponsored Tenby Under 16s completed the double over a Hundleton side at the Clicketts last weekend.

David Day slotted in their first after a lovely through ball from Tom Page, and a cross by Chris Iddon, playing in the unaccustomed role of centre forward, was unfortunately turned into his own goal by a visiting defender.

Before the break, Matthew Birch grabbed a third with his now distinctive shooting technique.

The second half was all Tenby, with the elated Iddon notching his first from close range and Day scoring direct from a corner.

Jack Christopher contributed with a well-taken brace, while Tenby kept the best two goals until last. The Seasiders' captain, Day, struck a thunderous shot from a fully 30 yards to claim his third hat-trick in as many game, while Iddon, not to outdone, blasted one in from a mere 25 yards.

The match balls were sponsored by Hillings of Tenby and Hurlow Construction.

Tenby fielded: L. Hurlow, D. Rowell, S. Smith, D. Taylor, T. Page, D. Day, P. Broadhurst, D. Otton, M. Birch, C. Iddon, J. Christopher, M. Davis, M. Smith.

TENBY U9s 4

ST. DAVIDS 11

St. Davids were unable to field a full Under 9s side and used several 10 year-olds to make up the numbers. This extra 12 months proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Before Tenby could wipe the sleep out of their eyes, the Saints were three tries up, with the home side finding the older boys hard to pull down.

Harry Owen restored a bit of pride when, after one of his typical runs, he reduced the arrears. But the Saints hit back with another two scores before half-time.

Mike Evans's half-time talk, echoing the words 'the bigger they are the harder they fall', worked for a short time as the Vikings tackled like demons. But the sheer physical strength and size of the older boys took its toll on the Seasiders' little minnows as St. Davids rattled up another three tries.

Although the tackling proved difficult, running with the ball in their hands was their forte, and Robert Luly, Philip Horsley, Rob Fairlie and Harry Owen revelled in this department. The latter three all scored good second half tries, with the unfortunate Luly just missing out on several attempts.

St. Davids finished with three tries before the final whistle went on what was a bitterly cold morning.

Special mention must go to little Daniel Fairlie who played his first match in Tenby colours and looks like a force to be reckoned with.

Tenby squad: H. Owen, R. Luly, P. Horsley, R. Fairlie, L. James, C. Hurlow, L. Fecci, D. Fairlie, J. Dennis, C. Evans, S. Turton, J. John, R. O'Neill, H. Pritchard, D. Robins, D. Griffin.
