TENBY U12s 12 HUNDLETON U12s 0
Tenby showed the value of having a squad system, with Scott Helmich going in goal in place of regular Richard Thomas, who had a hand injury. Richard was later to play in the defence in a second half switch, showing his versatility and adding to the team performance.
Tenby were soon on the attack against a lively-looking Hundleton team on a pitch which had recovered well from the mid-week rain.
Fitness in the damp conditions was not a problem as Tenby were soon in the lead when Guto Griffiths scored to round off a move involving Jordan Lloyd and Adam Johns.
Billy Vaughan soon settled into his accustomed role as the playmaker of the Tenby team and he gave the ball to Sam Christopher to put the home team 2-0 ahead.
Brave goalkeeping in the Hundleton goal stopped Tenby increasing their lead until Billy Vaughan put them 3-0 in front from the penalty spot.
Griffiths put Tenby 4-0 ahead with a volley at the far post after Vaughan had put Christopher through.
Christopher was on the scoresheet himself to round off a move involving a Vaughan corner and a good pass by Lloyd to give his team an impressive 5-0 lead, and an unselfish pass involving hard-working left-sided player Gavin Kinsey put in Johns who made it 6-0 with his first goal for the club.
Tenby could feel pleased with their first half performance, with all parts of the team doing well, as Hundleton attacked dangerously when they had the ball and when Tenby's back four, well organised by Aaron Goldsmith, were outpaced on two or three occasions, Scott Helmich read the situation well by coming from the goal to collect or to clear strongly upfield.
Generally, Goldsmith, who is becoming more impressive in every game, and the fullbacks of Joe Lewis and Richard Jones combined with the tenacity of Jamie Robins, were solid and contained any threatening attacks.
Tenby came out for the second half with Richard Thomas switching with the ever-reliable Robins, who was injured, and the team soon picked up its first-half rhythm, with Billy Vaughan scoring from outside the penalty area to put Tenby 7-0 ahead; and this was soon followed by an eighth goal as Jones fired in after a Griffiths shot was saved.
If Tenby's first half attacks were inspired by Kinsey down the left, in the second half there was more play down the Tenby right to feed Christopher who was always willing to try and beat the offside trap, and he put his side 10-0 ahead with two good goals in the space of five minutes.
Johns made it 11 with a fierce drive and Lloyd brought the final score to 12-0 with a well deserved goal to wipe out the memory of a Billy Vaughan penalty miss and the sight of Christopher hitting the bar when through on the Hundleton goalkeeper, who tried hard throughout.
This was a fine team performance by Tenby who, up to now, have needed time to adjust to the full size pitch and the 11-a-side game. Their teamwork, fitness and concentration on the playing system being used was very impressive, and the coach will have been pleased with the efforts of everyone at a stage of the season when there is time to make an even greater impact on their opponents and finish in a respectable position in the league.
Thanks are due to Steve Maytum for refereeing, Martin Kinsey for running the line, Natasha and parents for helping with the nets and the interest and encouragement shown by the supporters on the touchline.
Squad: Scott Helmich, Aaron Goldsmith, Jamie Robins, Joe Lewis, Richard Jones, Adam Johns, Richard Thomas, Billy Vaughan (capt), Gavin Kinsey, Sam Christopher, Jordan Lloyd, Guto Griffiths.
GIRLS FOOTBALL
Tenby Under 14s girls met Pembroke Boro in their first match. Both teams were well matched and Boro opened the scoring. Tenby equalised soon afterwards through Nikki Furling and the game ended all square at 1-1.
St. David's A were their next opponents and Kelly Furlong and Liz Nicholas scored to win the game 2-1.
The girls lost their first match of the tournament against Johnston 0-1. The Tenby girls did everything but score and were disappointed in dropping three points.
To make amends they beat St. David's B 4-0 in their final game, with Liz, Nikki and Kaylie Davies (2) all scoring good goals.
Rebecca Bevan and Penny Young played well in defence and Lauren Watkins was keen to keep goal to help out the team after being injured in the final game.
Squad: Penny Young, Rebecca Bevan, Lauren Watkins, Kelly Furlong, Nikki Furlong, Liz Nicholas, Kaylie Davies.
Thanks to all parents for their support.
CAMROSE U16s 4
TENBY U16s 3
The Lewis, Lewis and Co, Solicitors, sponsored Tenby Under 16s narrowly missed out on progressing to the next round of the Pembrokeshire Under 16s Cup, by losing by the odd goal in seven. Both sides found it almost impossible to play a short passing game, due to the excessively long grass at Camrose, and it eventually played a big part in the outcome of the match.
There was nothing between the two sides until an innocuous shot-come-cross, by the Camrose right winger, seemed to be well covered by Chris Iddon in the Tenby goal. However, the usually safe Iddon took his eye off the ball at the last moment and watched in agony as it slipped through his hands into the back of the goal.
Tenby responded immediately with Tom Page skipping past his marker to send over a pin-point cross for Jack Christopher to volley in from six yards.
The Seasiders then took the lead when Perry Broadhurst cooly placed his shot wide of the home custodian after a good cross from David Otton.
Tom Page, who was a constant threat to the home defence, got a well deserved third goal for Tenby following good work from Scott Smith and Matthew Birch.
Mike Davis replaced the injured Christoper and with only minutes remaining to the break, Camrose, pulled a goal back slightly against the run of play.
The start of the second half was rather stalemate, with both teams defending staunchly and Tenby's Darren Taylor and the Hilling twins, Tom and Simon, putting in some big tackles.
The match came to life once again, when a neat movement was finished off in style by Camrose with a fine shot from the edge of the Tenby penalty area.
The game was evenly balanced and heading for a draw when a speculative 20-yard back pass, from Perry Broadhurst, stopped well short of the advancing Chris Iddon, due to the long grass. The ball was quickly pounced upon by the Camrose centre forward who fired past a stranded Iddon.
Tenby continued to fight back and a high free-kick by David Day slipped through the hands of the Camrose 'keeper, only for it to strike the crossbar and rebound safely back into the keeper's hands.
With eight minutes remaining, the Tenby captain, Day, went on one of his typical charging runs, only to be blatantly up-ended inside the home penalty box. The referee, who had made several unusual decision during the match, which had both teams and supporters scratching their heads, decided to award a drop ball. A long protest ensued by all concerned and he eventually blew the final whistle, admist all the protests, with four minutes left on the clock.
Tenby fielded: C. Iddon, T. Hilling, D. Taylor, S. Smith, S. Hilling, P. Broadhurst, M. Birch, D. Day, D. Otton, T. Page, J. Christopher, L. Robson, M. Davis, O. Evans.
TENBY 2NDS 12
PENDINE 2NDS 0
On Saturday, Tenby Seconds returned to the Clicketts after a four-game absence and made sure they made a game of it on such a good surface.
The first half was full of chances, with 'mega misses' this week going to Alun Morgan, although Dai Merricks was a close second.
Before 45 minutes was up, however, Dale Elms had rounded up a hat-trick, Willie had opened up the scoring, Palin finally put one in the net, and Spindlove put away two and had a superb game out on the right with some delightful crossing and shooting.
The second half took longer to get into, but after a few changes, such as Tom Davies on for a 'standard' Deryn Brace, things got going again and Dai Merricks secured a hat-trick, Peter Horsley scored with a rocket of a free-kick and Tom Davies slotted home his first of the season.
Thanks go to the match ball sponsor, Neil Finlay Cars, and to the Lifeboat Tavern for the food after the game.
