Firefighters in Tenby have raised the magnificent sum of £3,250 for the Firemen's National Benevolent Fund this year. A cheque, swelled by the proceeds of the successful summer carnival, was officially presented to Divisional Officer Harry Webber by chairman of the local benevolent fund committee, Kris Steele, during the Tenby station's annual dinner at the Broadmead Hotel on Friday night. In making the presentation, firefighter Steele reflected on the carnival and open day, describing it as an 'absolutely fabulous' day. "It was a really great carnival," he said. "We had a variety of different attractions at the station during the day which were enjoyed by everyone." "But the highlight of the day, firefighter Steele said, "was the carnival. "It was absolutely spectacular," he said. "The floats were excellent and I would like to thank all the schools and organisations who took part. "The atmosphere around town was electric, with everyone enjoying themselves." Firefighter Steele also paid tribute to everyone who had helped make the event a success. He gave a special vote of thanks to the event's main sponsor, Mrs. Lesley Fisher, of Tenby House Hotel, and Chris and Bev Godding, of Tredemyl Print, for printing the posters, fliers and Christmas turkey draw tickets. He also thanked the publicans and retailers for their gifts to both the raffle and coffee morning, the carnival winners who donated their prize money back, and everyone who helped on the day, behind the scenes, especially his fellow firefighters, their wives, partners and families, and retired members Oscar and Diane, Clive and Ruth and Merv and Marge. "The boys at the station were absolutely fantastic. We had one of the best turnouts in years. Without the support of the boys there would be no carnival; they all have to give up a day's work to put on the carnival and they really do put in a lot of work," he said. In addition, firefighter Steele thanked Sandra and Dai for running the Christmas turkey draw. "They collect a lot of money for the fund and it really does mean a lot," he said. Delighted to receive the cheque, DO Webber said it was a 'wonderful' effort. "You really do stand out among other stations for the work that you do," he said, praising the great charity work, great camaraderie and great support from the firefighters' wives and families. Meanwhile, in proposing a toast to Tenby firemen, the town's Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter, said: "You are a great bunch of boys. Tenby thinks the world of you and all that you do." Grace was said by retired Station Officer, Clive Webb, the loyal toast was proposed by firefighter Jeremy Lees, while firefighter Steele proposed a toast to the guests. In response, chairman of Tenby Round Table, Paul Morris, presented a cheque and pennant, commemorating Table's 50th anniversary, to Station Officer Dicky Lewis. Firefighter Richard James proposed a toast to absent friends, while Sub Officer Martin Hurlow presented newly-weds Marc and Louise James with a gift. Winner of the 'clown award' this year was Mark Tucker.

Main sponsor of Tenby Firemen’s Carnival, Mrs. Lesley Fisher, of Tenby House Hotel, is seen presenting a cheque to the brigade’s carnival committee.
