Tenby Civic Society recently met at St. Johns Church for their annual general meeting which was well attended. Members were presented with the executive committee's report with such matters as the maintenance of Allan's View and a survey of trees undertaken; attendance at Tenby Bowling Club to inaugurate the notice board donated in memory of Arthur Ormond, president of the society for many years; the organisation of an evening visit to Cresselly House with a tour guided by Tom Lloyd; the distribution and sale of Tenby Town Trail leaflets; the laying of a wreath at the Remembrance Day ceremony; supporting the series of Tree Preservation Orders and weekly overseeing proposed local building plans; checking to see that the historic and architectural value of the interiors and exteriors of some buildings where major works were being proposed were protected; involvement in setting-up a floral display in St. Mary's Church Flower Festival; setting up a society web-site (enormous thanks to Tony Evans) and the provision of a telescope to be sited on Castle Hill.
Presentations had been made in thanks for service to the society to ex-chairman and president, Jack Davies, and to ex-treasurer, Clive Mathias.
Thanks were also offered to Harry Gardiner (chairman), Tony Evans (ex-secretary), Chris Brown (ex-treasurer) and Roz Oak (retir¡ing to continue studies) for all their hard work last year.
The following were elected to the executive committee for the period 2006-2007: Caroline Thomas (president), Harry Gardiner (chairman), Trevor Hallett (vice-chairman), John Hughes (correspondence secretary), Alan Williams (minutes secretary) and Albie Smosarski (membership secretary and treasurer). Other committee members include John Beynon, Emma Geertman, Joyce Mawdsley and Kevin Thomas. There are still places left for involvement in this committee.
Members raised the following points of concern for correspondence to the appropriate bodies: there is a lack of toilet facilities in our tourist town throughout the year; there is still a need for overnight beds at the new Cottage Hospital; many of the older litter bins need repairs and repainting.
The meeting ended with a broad discussion of the Lottery proposals for St. Catherine's Island, Castle Hill and Harbour area. Views were given for and against development of the island, concluding in a proposal being passed to the effect that the society favoured the development of the fort as an interpretation centre, valuing its historical tradition, and that it was necessary to develop a low-water landing stage.
Thanks were offered to Joyce for providing refreshments.
The society always welcomes new members, be they local or further afield (one member lives in New Zealand!). Please see Albie at Cofion, Bridge Street.
