Vice-chairman Dave Marriot gave a warm welcome to Alan Squires FDPS, AWPF, to the Tenby and District Camera Club meeting on Thursday.
Alan is a member of the Gwynfor Camera Club and is no stranger to the Tenby club. His subject for the meeting was ‘My Sport Scene’.
Alan started at the Newport Speedway Go-Kart racing track, where he photographed youngsters, aged seven to 16, riding 70cc mini motorbikes. He gave advice and explained the images, looking for the angles, considering the direction of the sun, and thinking about each picture part in telling the story of the event as a whole.
Members were entertained to various sports images, go-kart racing at St. Athens, canoeing at the Cardiff White Water Centre, cycling at the Newport Velodrome and beach buggy racing at Weston-Super-Mare.
Alan’s advice was to plan as much as possible, but he does like going to some events with no preconceived ideas about how he will shoot.
Following a refreshment break, Alan showed members images of the IPC Disabled Athletics meeting held in Swansea, where he was fortunate to be the media photographer, having several of his images published in the sporting magazine associated with the event.
His advice to members was to practice and shoot as much and as many different sports as you can. Each sport is unique and has its’ own challenges to the photographer; only by shooting a wide variety of sports will you develop the necessary variety of skills to be a sports photographer.
Alan answered many questions, before the vice-chairman thanked him for a wonderful evening and the variation of sports and images shown.
