After the disappointment of defeat at the hands of local rivals, Haverfordwest, the previous week, Tenby United bounced back to winning ways at Heywood Lane on Saturday with a comfortable 39 points to 20 victory over Gorseinon.

Emerging victorious over the Seasiders earlier in the season, the visitors may have been quietly confident of 'doing the double' in this National League division four (west) clash but the United came out of the blocks like prize greyhounds, opening up a 17-3 lead in as many minutes with two converted tries.

The first was a fine piece of opportunism from stand-off Bleddyn Evans as Tenby made their intentions clear from the outset. The young pivot charged down an attempted clearance from his opposite number Darren Wilcox on the visitors 10, gathered the ball and raced over between the sticks to give himself the simplest of conversions.

Evans was off target with a penalty minutes later before Gorseinon centre Andrew Burder reduced the deficit with a similar three pointer at the other end.

Tenby back row forward, Robert James had an immense game throughout and would have my nod as man of the match for his tireless ability to win possession on the floor for the Seasiders, but he was also no shirker in going forward, as he demonstrated when he broke the gain line and made ground to set up the United's second try.

The Seasiders recycled at the breakdown of James's race up the middle, stringing the ball out along their threes to centre Neil Truman who showed his wealth of experience by selling a textbook dummy before cutting back inside to touch down.

Evans added the extras and the United stalwarts could have been forgiven for thinking that a cricket score could be on the cards particularly with wings Paul Luger and Steve Hartland, fullback Darren Rees, centres Truman and Brace, and half backs Evans and Steve Williams benefiting from quality possession from their hard working pack.

While James was the star of the show he only just shaded Aussie lock Ben Armstrong, who made plenty of hard yards for the Seasiders with the ball in hand, while Armstrong's South Hemisphere partner, Gene Hocking, back row men Nicky Allen and Paul Broaders and front row trio of Lee Tucker, Dai Balkwill and skipper Richard Rossiter grafted 110 per cent in the loose and around the fringes of the set pieces.

However, with Burder trying to rally his team in midfield and the Gorseinon scrum starting to find its feet, Tenby were unable to turn their pressure into points, indiscipline allowing Burder to relieve the pressure with some rifling kicks to touch.

Over all it was in this facet that the visitors - or more accurately Burder - outshone Tenby on the day, with poor kicking from hand, particularly with the wind at their backs, failing to gain the homesters the field position they needed and allowing Gorseinon to run the ball back at Tenby.

It called for some tenacious tackling from the Seasiders with Truman, Hartland and Luger putting in some big hits, but Gorseinon were not to be denied, centre Damien Hall splitting the United defence to allow the visitors to set up camp in the Tenby five.

Indiscipline netted them a penalty with hooker Neil Wilcox burrowing over for a try which Burder duly converted to reduce the arrears to seven points.

Tenby looked to have gone off the boil a little in the second quarter with Burder's intelligent line kicking allowing the visitors to keep the United under pressure and another Burder penalty brought Gorseinon to within one score of the Tenby tally.

Just before the interval however, Tenby launched a come back with a good touch finder from Rees gaining rare field position just outside the visitors 10.

A good take at the ensuing line out by Broaders set Armstrong up for the drive which broke the Gorseinon defence and sent James through for a deserved try under the posts.

Evans added the extras to put Tenby 11 points ahead at the break and they could have made it more when they got their back line moving again but Brace was called back for a forward pass.

Gorseinon probed the Tenby defences straight from the change around but soon found themselves on the back foot again with Williams acting as a ninth forward to make ground from the base.

Pressure in the corner almost netted Allen a deserved try, but match official Martin Lewis, of Gower, ruled that the ball had not been grounded amidst the melee of players.

Tenby were awarded a scrum five as a result and then netted a penalty, with Gorseinon number eight Ryan Thomas earning himself 10 minutes in the sin bin for delaying tactics.

The Seasiders tried to roll the resulting tap penalty over the line, but Mr. Lewis spotted a knock on.

Gorseinon were awarded a penalty which allowed Burder to clear, while co-centre Hall showed his alertness with an interception as Rees and Brace tried to run possession back at the vistors but Tenby managed to absorb the pressure.

Midway through the third quarter Tenby brought fresh legs on in the shape of Justin Richards, Scott Payne and Chris James with Balkwill, Allen and Broaders taking a well earned breather.

Robert James was again to the fore winning ball off the floor to set up Hocking who sent a beautifully timed pass out to Hartland allowing the burly winger to race over from just inside the visitors 22 for an unconverted try.

Although Thomas returned to the fray for Gorseinon, the visitors still had to play on with 14 men when hooker Wilcox was yellow carded and then they were reduced to 13 men when lock Ronnie Clayfield was similarly dealt with by Mr. Lewis.

Evans rubbed salt in by stroking over a penalty awarded for Crayfield's indiscretion, to make it 32-13 to Tenby.

A touch of complacency started to creep into Tenby's game in the last quarter and while Richards could always be relied on to make 20 or so yards with his bullish running from the base, things were a little more scrappy in the loose, while the reduced Gorseinon pack actually took a couple of strikes against the head in the scrums.

As is always the case when you've got your backs to the wall, Gorseinon raised their game and it called for some sterling defence from Tenby particularly from Gavin Brace, who replaced Truman midway through the second half.

Tenby could still be inventive when they wanted to be however, a neat little grubber kick from Rees forcing the visitors onto the retreat.

Tenby's pressure at a series of tap penalties netted them a penalty try, which Evans converted to virtually seal the game, but Gorseinon were not finished, hooker Wilcox returning to the field to grab a try off a tap penalty in the Heywood Mount corner following some intense pressure from the visitors in the closing minutes.

Burder converted with what turned out to be the last kick of the game.
