The fortnightly meeting was not as well attended as previously; this was due to the inclement weather (writes DGJ). However small in numbers, the quality was of the usual high standard of enthusiasm of participation. The president, Darrel John, opened the meeting with warm fraternal salutation to those who were in attendance, and mentioned absentees by virtue of illness and other pressing commitments. The president's opening gambit referred to the previous meeting, whereupon he demonstrated the techniques of recognising and performing CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) often described as the 'Kiss of Life' to an unconscious person, which was well received. The volunteers were John Cochlin and John Potter. He suggested perhaps the members would appreciate further information about First Aid, which received assent by everyone; he then explained and demonstrated the method of placing a patient in the 'recovery position'. These 10 to 15- minute sessions will be continued at future meetings. There were no anniversaries of members to record. However, in view of the date and occasion of her 80th birthday, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was accorded their esteemed congratulations in the usual manner amongst her loyal subjects. With the absence of the secretary and treasurer duly noted, Tony Webster, vice-president, announced the proposed cruise via the SS Waverley on June 18; this arrangement is being undertaken by the Saundersfoot Probus Club. Departure venue is from Milford; there are 20 places available, cost £28.50. In addition to the foregoing, Tenby Probus Club propose to visit the Welsh National Assembly Building, Cardiff, on July 20 or maybe 27; members are asked to indicate their intention to the secretary, soon. The next Ladies' Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 31, whereby the ladies will be entertained to a wine and cheese repast; a warm welcome is also extended to the widows of former members. This week's speaker was Peter Durdin, who presented a most entertaining talk on his experience while undertaking an engineering project in Iraq during the 1950s. He emphasised the value of exercising profound patience to understand and accept political red tape and local customs; thank you Peter. At the next meeting, on May 3, the club will welcome Rev. John Potter, who will undoubtedly present his subject in his inimitable style. Wilf Hardy mentioned the proposed visit to London with an overnight stay at the Thistle Hotel, and a conducted tour of Parliament, followed by the attendance to a theatre, i.e. Rat Pack. This tour is being organised by the Tenby RAFA Club. Cost £103 per person, date June 6. Those interested, please contact Don Ramsey on 01834 843198 for details. The raffle this week was won by Harold James, a worthy recipient. If you are a retired, or even semi-retired professional or businessman, a warm welcome is extended to join with the members every other Wednesday at the Tenby Bowls Club. Meetings commence at around 10.45 am (officially 11 am). Phone the secretary, Lew Day, on 01834 844633 for additional information.
