Last week's meeting at St. Florence Village Hall was the results night for the natural history competition. This was judged by Les Loosemore ARPS AWPF, of the Welsh Photographic Federation. The first half of the evening was the judging of the prints. All the entries were of a very high standard and, although Mr. Loosemore awarded marks out of 20, he said that he felt the critique was the important part, not the numeric value given. He didn't want to discourage budding photographers by giving them a low mark, when lots of effort had gone into the composing and preparation of the work. He separated the photographs which he marked, and some which he didn't. It soon appeared that the ones reserved would be the winners. Building up the anticipation, he eventually selected seven photographs, several of bird subjects, and some of animals. Out of these, he picked one by Paul Richards as the winner, with 20 marks. The others were by Kevin Dunphy (posthumously), Jill Baxter, two by Andrew Baxter and another two by Paul Richards. After a break for refreshments and a chance for everyone to have a closer look at the entries, it was time for the judging of the projected images. Again the standard was very high, and after a very good and constructive commentary, Paul Richards again emerged the winner with 20 marks, with Andrew Baxter coming second and third. Everyone agreed that it had been a very interesting evening and that they had learnt a lot. The next meeting will be a talk by David Lingham FRPS, called Totally in the Dark, on Thursday, November 22. Everyone is welcome to join the club for their friendly meetings.
