Tenby United 66 pts
Cwmgors 10pts
Tenby United made it three league wins on the bounce with a comprehensive demolition of League Four West basement club Cwmgors last Saturday.
The writing was very much on the wall for the Amman Valley visitors before a ball had been kicked, as they were unable to field a front row, leading to uncontested scrums from the outset.
To the Seasiders' credit, they refused to let this distract them in any way and swept aside a limited visiting outfit with some ease.
The tone for the afternoon was set in the opening exchanges with the United forwards driving powerfully. Back from injury, number eight Sam Smith was eager to get into the action and a foray down the right flank earned an early penalty chance for stand off Tom Lewis after the visitors were adjudged to have killed the ball.
Lewis pushed the kick wide, but it was only a couple of minutes later that the homeside registered their first try of the afternoon. Centre Mark Heywood made good inroads on the left, showing good strength to stay on his feet. Quick ball allowed scrum-half Rhys Thomas to feed Lewis who brought fullback Aled Griffiths into the line.
Lock forward Gareth Edwards was in close support and provided the link to young winger Dan Colley who did well to touch down wide on the right. Lewis slotted over a well-judged conversion.
The United were hungry to add to their score quickly, Wyndham Williams looking for work and prominent in the early stages.
Colley nearly doubled his tally after some great work from Rhys Thomas, but the visitors from Carmarthenshire just managed to snuff out the danger.
Their respite was short lived though as Colley's opposite wing man Sam Cataki showed some elusive running to leave a number of would-be tacklers in his wake to cross close to the uprights. Lewis made light work of the extras to put the home side 14-0 up in as many minutes.
The match was proving to be a fast and open affair and the visitors, who lifted the Tovali Cup and Division Four South West Championship in 2004, fought hard to try and get back into the game.
Just as thy seemed to be winning some possession, however, they gifted the homeside their third try of the afternoon. Cwmgors fullback Thomas was caught in possession in front of the terraces on the Tenby 10 metre line. Dan Colley was able to rip the ball loose and Mark Heywood gratefully seized on it, strolling in under the posts for a simple score that Lewis converted.
The visitors looked unlikely to register any points at this stage, but they were given a chance to get on the scoreboard after 25 minutes when they were awarded a penalty. Referee Stan Griffiths penalised Tenby loose head Ben Cray for a shoulder charge, allowing Cwm stand-off Windsor to reduce the deficit to 21-3.
Almost immediately though Tenby were presented with a chance to restore their lead after the visitors were penalised for going offside at a ruck situation. Lewis pushed the kick to the left of the sticks however and as the half was drawing to a close, the Seasiders did not look as though they were going to capitalise fully on their massive superiority.
But fullback Aled Griffiths made sure that the United soon had the game by the scruff of the neck. From a scrum on the left, he came into the line at a fine angle, slicing through the midfield before brushing aside his opposing number 15 to score near the posts. Lewis added his fourth conversion to make it 28-3 with just six minutes to go before the break.
It could have been even better for the home outfit. Gareth Edwards leapt high to secure fine lineout ball and the United used it well, prop Simon Griffiths showing up in midfield and showing good hands to feed fellow front row man Ben Cray. But just when another score seemed inevitable, the referee awarded a penalty to the visitors for holding on to the ball on the floor.
The Amman Valley men would have been relieved to hear the half-time whistle, but their relief was short lived as the homeside rang the changes at the interval, bringing on fresh legs in the pack in the form of Ifan Davies and Adam Ball to replace Simon Griffiths and Harry Bolton who had both worked hard to set up the platform for victory.
After his heroics a fortnight earlier, fly-half Tom Lewis started the second half eager to get in on the scoring act. After a scrappy passage of play, the number 10 gathered the ball and although there was a suggestion of a slight knock on, he rounded the fullback to score. He added the conversion to push the Seasiders into a 35-3 lead.
To the visitors' credit, they refused to totally give up the ghost and after the United had been penalised deep in their own 22 for using their hands on the floor, they took a quick tap. Loose head Lilley picked up the pass and was able to plunge over from close range for a score that Windsor converted.
This only seemed to galvanise the United, with Sam Cataki again showing silky running skills. The home eight were able to recycle the ball quickly, centres Heywood and Gavin Brace combining well before feeding back inside to stand off Lewis. He did well to look for the support but the referee judged his offload to be slightly forward.
The number 10 was not to be denied a second try though. The speedy Dan Colley made good ground after Cwm had kicked away possession. The homeside retained possession well allowing Gavin Brace to make a half break and pop the ball back to Lewis, who baffled the home defenders with a deft show and go before touching down. He failed to add the conversion, leaving the home side 40-10 ahead with a full half hour to go.
The United were temporarily reduced to 14 men when Adam Ball was yellow carded by Mr. Griffiths for failing to retreat 10 metres after a quick tap penalty.
Shortly afterwards, Tenby made a further front row change, the hard-working Ben Cray being replaced by Mark Brace.
The loss of a back row man did not seem to affect the home eight and they featured in an excellent move with the three-quarters that led to a second score for Colley that Lewis converted.
The drinks were very much on the blonde speedster on Saturday night as he crossed for his hattrick touchdown following a beautifully worked home score that started from a scrum deep in their 22. Lewis orchestrated a fine miss one move that allowed Mark Heywood to show his pace before Colley rounded off a memorable afternoon for him.
Colley was replaced straight afterwards by Barri John, but the United were far from finished.
Ifan Davies drove strongly from deep in the United half and allowed his forwards to rampage downfield showing great hands, with Adam Ball, now back on the field, showing up strongly. The ball eventually found replacement pop Mark Brace wide on the right, the front row man showing good pace for the most popular touchdown of the day.
There was just enough time for the Seasiders to break the 60-point mark, Brace linking well to supply the scoring pass for Cataki after good support work from the home wide. Lewis converted the final score of the afternoon to give the Seasiders an emphatic 66-10 victory.
While they will come up against much stiffer opposition during the course of the season, this was another confidence boosting victory for the Seasiders after fine victories against Hendy and Betws. They will be looking to stay close to table toppers Llandeilo and challenge for that elusive promotion spot.
