A small but select band of Trefloyne golfers braved the unpleasant weather on Saturday, December 21, to participate in the annual Christmas Spirit competition. Brian Norman, one of those who will play in virtually any weather, was the winner with 35 points, an excellent score given the conditions. His well earned prize was a bottle of Scotch, kindly donated by club captain Alan Brown and Pat, this cheery pair having recently taken over as mine hosts at the Crown Inn, Penally. The weather discouraged the ladies, and the bottle of vodka kindly donated by ladies' captain, Liz Crockford, will be held over for another day.
Conditions were much more amenable for the 'End of Year' competition on Saturday, December 28. This was a 12-hole event, with a separate division for juniors. John Chirnside won the bottle of Scotch first prize with 30 points. Dave McMann was second with 27 and Stuart Evans, Richard Preece, Terry Whiston and Jack Zeraschi all scored 25 to tie for third. Dave McMann, Richard Preece and Peter Scourfield each registered a two.
David Warren won a box of golf balls for leading home the junior division with 27 points. Nathan Lewis was second with 24 and Luke Laidler and Matthew McMann shared third with 22 points each.
The midweek stablefords prior to Christmas were won by Jack Zeraschi and Pat Corcoran. Jack made the better score, winning on Tuesday, December 17, with a fine 42-point haul. In a high scoring event, Garfield Price and Trevor Lewis shared second with 41 points each, and Roger Thompson was fourth with 39. Pat's win on December 19, was less dramatic in scoring terms, with 36 points just getting him home ahead of Roger Cryer on countback, but the win was far more profitable than usual, with Seniors' captain Graham Wharton having put up a bottle of Scotch for first prize. John Smith was a close third with 35.
