Swimmers from Saundersfoot School recently travelled to Cardiff for the Urdd National Swimming Championships, held at the newly-built International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay for the first time.
Competing against other schools from across the country, Carys Davies and Daniel Davies got Saundersfoot's day off to a great start.
Carys swam in both the 25-metre freestyle and backstroke events, having previously won both of these races at the Pembrokeshire Championships. She swam well and qualified for the finals of each event, where she swam superbly, finishing fourth on both occasions.
Daniel, who also won two events at the Pembrokeshire competition, swam in the breaststroke and individual medley at Cardiff. Swimming brilliantly, Daniel picked up two silver medals in very close races.
The relay events were the last of the day, but proved well worth waiting for, both in terms of excitement and success. The Year 5 and 6 girls' team of Jess Wainwright, Leah Asparassa, Laura Webber and Ffion Davies qualified for the medley relay and finished a brave fourth.
The boys' team, comprising of Jack Parkinson, Edward Hurle, Miles Thomstone and Daniel Davies, earned a bronze medal in the freestyle relay and a silver medal in the medley relay.
The Year 3 and 4 team of Carys Davies, Jemma Hurds, Esme Greer and Megan Cook, won both their events at the Pembrokeshire gala and were therefore entered in the freestyle relay and medley relay in Cardiff.
Each of the girls gave their all in both races and their efforts were rewarded with some wonderful results, winning both their events to claim two gold medals.
The school would like to thank all those parents, relatives and school staff who travelled to Cardiff to provide the children with such valuable (not to mention vocal) support.
