A recent general meeting of the Tenby 2020 organisation was told that financial support was now coming in for the proposed post of resort manager. The biggest firm offer received so far was for £3,000 in secretarial and administrative support from Tim Brace on behalf of FBM Holidays. Support had also been received from Tenby Town Council and the Chamber of Trade and Tourism.
Chair Mike Thorne said: "This is a superb boost to our initiative, and we should now be able to go on to attract more funds, both from other private sector companies and from the public sector."
It is hoped that further support will be provided by the Welsh Development Agency and the Wales Tourist Board.
The meeting also discussed other Tenby 2020 projects that had recently been completed, such as the additional landscaping on the North Beach zigzag, and the projects in progress, such as the interpretative plaques. The order for the plaques was now being placed, and it was hoped to erect them in the autumn.
There was a lengthy discussion about the proposed new lifeboat station. Opinion was sharply divided between those who feared the RNLI would leave Tenby if the current proposal were not approved, and those who felt that this proposal was for an over-large building in the wrong place.
In the end it was decided to maintain Tenby 2020's current position, which is to support a replacement building, but saying that the design and location would have a detrimental impact on the town.
Lastly, there was a discussion about the Cafe Culture event held on June 10. It was generally felt that it had been a great success, and that it should be repeated. It was hoped to make it bigger and better next year, including perhaps more streets. Planning would start in October, and all offers of help would be welcome.
