Pupils at Penally VC Primary School, Penally, are in for a treat as volunteers have started work on transforming their school playground into a valuable resource for education, learning and fun. The project is being run through Supergrounds, a new programme to improve school grounds funded by NatWest and managed by Learning through Landscapes in partnership with Groundwork. Local residents, many of whom have children at the school, will be lending a hand to transform parts of the school ground, along with the school children and NatWest manager for Tenby, Nigel Firth, who will be swapping his computer and financial statements for spades and paint brushes. The project will not just transform the school environment but also challenge the children's imaginations, helping them to learn and develop. The local community have also been generous and have kindly supported the project. Special thanks to Derek Bibby who has generously volunteered to undertake the main construction work. In the next three years, Supergrounds will help improve a number of school grounds across the UK. The scheme aims to create well-designed and managed grounds, which make a lasting difference to children's learning environment. In the first phase, 11 primary schools across Wales have been included in the programme which includes Cenarth Primary School near Newcastle Emlyn. Nigel Firth, also a school governor, said: "School grounds play a critical role in schools, offering a curricular and emotional resource for children. "When school grounds are developed and used in the right way they can positively affect pupil behaviours and attitude, such as reduce bullying, vandalism, stress and accidents. "I know that the children are very excited about the project, and it's great to know that Supergrounds are helping them learn through their play." Mr. Graham Doney, headmaster at Penally School, said: "School playgrounds are one of the few outdoor spaces that are available to children. For many children who do not have access to a garden or live near a park, school grounds are probably their only experience of the outdoors and an important part of the learning environment. "We are thrilled to have Supergrounds helping us make the most of this resource - it will make all the difference to the pupils."
