Last Sunday, Sport Pembrokeshire and Manorbier AFC came together to deliver a girls 5/60 schools football tournament in the south of the county.

The tournament was conceived between the two partners as a way to promote female football in a positive manner in the county, and to assist recruitment of girls who are not currently playing for clubs.

Information was available to all the players, in order for them to be directed to clubs within their areas.

Held at Manorbier Football Club, and jointly organised between the two parties, the tournament attracted teams from most of the secondary schools within the county.

Despite earlier scares from very inclement weather, the sun came out right on cue to witness some very good standard and enthusiastic schools football from the girls, delighting the supporters, coaches and 5/60 officers. Testament indeed to the hard work put in by the girls with their regular schools club coaching sessions, and the 5/60 officers who organise them.

The tournament was almost an all-female affair, with girls from Manorbier U17s and local female teachers refereeing, and personnel from Manorbier Ladies team carrying out all the scoring. With parents of girls from the football club carrying out the catering, it really was a united effort by all.

The final was a good game between the two outstanding teams on the day, Pembroke  and Fishguard, with Fishguard deservedly emerging as champions.
