The West Wales Local Association of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors returned to Tenby Golf Club for its annual charity golf day last Friday.
Twenty-two teams of four golfers enjoyed glorious weather, although a stiff breeze made scoring difficult. The fabulous greens were the fastest they had been this year and some of the pins were in very tricky positions.
This year's main charity is the very worthy Wales Air Ambulance which will receive a minimum of £2,500. Other charities and the R.I.C.S.'s Lion Heart will also benefit. In all, over £3,250 was raised.
The 2009 winners were the strong Tenby and Narberth Tyres quartet of Paul Hoyland, Johnny Morris, Andy Evans and the left-handed Paul James who scored an excellent 82 points.
Phil Kidney, Peter Rossi, Gerald Hewitt and the younger Chris Davies, known collectively as '13P Reunion', handed in their card showing a total of 75 points. However, their scoring contained various mathematical errors and was corrected by the adjudicators to an enhanced 80 points so they claimed the runners-up spot!
In third place came the team sponsored by Heywoods of Saundersfoot. Paul Heywood, Roger Schooling, Barrie Frayne and Neil Webb accumulated 79 points. This score was matched by the Alexander Partnership four of Ian Thomas, Steve Allen, Andrew Williams and Steve Sheldon who had the best front nine of the day, but faded slightly on the way home and had to settle for fourth.
Bill Ledwood, Phil Ledwood, Hugh Phillips and Mike Smiddy, of Unit Engineers and Constructors, were fifth. Together with Chris Beecher, Mervyn Tucker, Roy Howell and Paul Jenkins, of Hi-tech Industrial Roofing, they recorded 78 points, but had a better back nine.
During the prize-giving, the organisers thanked others who had contributed to a wonderful day, including Chris Jenkins and his green staff for the superb condition of the links, Rhys Harry and his assistants in the pro shop, Steve and Hilary Turner, Tenby G.C.'s new steward and stewardess, who, together with their hard-working team, provided a fine meal for all the competitors, and Jim Martin who meticulously checked the cards.
However, the biggest gratitude was saved for all the firms, bodies and individuals who sponsored teams and holes etc. Their generosity is very much appreciated in these extremely difficult times. WWLA of the RICS is also very grateful to the 21 golf clubs who donated green fee vouchers for the raffle.
The evening entertainment was provided by the well-known Bryn Phillips, star of the former TV hit show, The Comedians. He had his audience roaring with laughter for over a hour and his performance was a fitting way in which to conclude a very memorable and successful day.
