Tenby Coastguard team and an SAR helicopter were called to Caldey Island on Saturday to help rescue a stranded bull.

The beast, weighing an estimated one ton, had fallen some 12 to 15 feet down a blow hole near Star Cliffe on the south-western side of the monastic isle.

Alerted to the bull's plight, Tenby's Coastguard team decided that it did not have the necessary equipment to raise such a large animal from such a location and called in the services of the rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor.

Members of the Coastguard team met with the helicopter on the rugby field adjacent to Tenby Junior School armed with cliff rescue equipment and slings borrowed from the crane at Tenby harbour.

On arrival on the island, local vet, Chris Kerner, sedated the animal while members of the cliff rescue team descended the blow hole to prepare it for lifting by the helicopter.

The bull was safely brought up from the blow hole and was said to be "fully recovered" from his ordeal on Tuesday.
