An area right on our doorstep with panoramic views of sea and countryside and riddled with ancient footpaths and long disused styles was the route chosen by volunteer walks leader Barbara Morris, last Saturday (writes B.S.).

Yet it was an area that was not familiar to many of the Steps2Health walkers.

Our starting point was New Hedges. Most caught the bus from Tenby, some drove there, while a few enthusiasts walked there.

It was hard to believe we were not far from the main road as we took to the lane and then detoured along public footpaths which led through fields, affording us memorable views. Fortunately, visibility was quite good, though the outline of the Preselis was discernible only to the keenest eyes. History probably lay under our feet as there have been recent archeological digs in these fields which may soon be built upon.

It seemed to be in no time at all that we had reached the Butts Field where we enjoyed our coffee at the end of a walk which most will want to repeat. It is planned to go further afield tomorrow (Saturday). Please note the earlier time of 10.15 am when the mini-bus will leave from outside Somerfield for the Stackpole Centre. The walk will be along the eastern arm of Bosherston Lily ponds. To find out if there are any vacancies on the mini- bus, ring Paul on 07773788173, or meet at the Stackpole Centre at 10.45 am.

There is no charge for joining these walks which are part of the all-Wales 'Walking the Way to Health' initiative. All are welcome.
