If you want to create a dramatic opening to the second session of a concert whereby the four sections of a male voice choir appear from four corners of the church humming the lilting melody of Calon Lan, softly at first and then raising to a crescendo, as the members mount the stage, then one way is by meticulous, painstaking choreography and dedicated rehearsal.

Then there is plan B. With more of an allusion to the words of Men of Harlech: 'He is bravest, he who leads us', our innovative and apparently visionary musical director Ian 'Wilbur' Williams employed the strategy: 'Don't worry it will work.' Amazingly, however it did indeed work very well and as the last choir member mounted the stage and took his place, the words of the first verse and the lovely accompaniment began right on time.

Calon Lan was sung as part of a medley of three Welsh songs, being followed by 'My Little Welsh Home' (performed as a solo by Huw Morris) and ending with O Gymru.

All of this was part of our first concert of the season and took place on St. David's Day in St. Johns Church, Tenby, and despite featuring a number of songs for the first time and one or two new arrangements, it went down very well indeed. Y Tangnefeddwyr (The Peacemaker) was a particular highlight, featuring a new section performed unaccompanied by the choir. More than a few tears were spotted in the audience.

Those present also had the pleasure of hearing Lily Whitehurst on violin accompanied by mother Rebecca on the piano, all adding to a enjoyable first evening of the concert season. The concert was held in aid of church funds and £456 was raised for this good cause.

The cawl and quiz evening held on the previous Friday evening was also a highly enjoyable social evening for choir members, partners and friends and raised £150 for choir funds.

Ever sung in the bath or the shower? Ever joined in a pub sing-song or a bit of karaoke? You could be just the sort of person we are looking for to join the choir. The choir is made up of a lot of different people, some more gifted than others, but anyone can contribute and enjoy it with a bit of practice and guidance. If you are interested in finding out more, just come and watch a rehearsal (no need to join in) on a Tuesday or Thursday at 7.30 pm at the County Club, The Croft, Tenby.
