With Christmas out of the way and a new year upon us, why not step into 2004 by joining Saundersfoot's band of brave bathers and celebrate New Year's Day with a dip in the sea.

Sponsored again this year by Oakwood, the must see occasion begins at 11.30 am on January 1, and if your bold enough to take part and aren't too hung-over from the previous night's celebrations, then sponsorship forms are available from In-Strand, Evans, and local public houses.

Last year's event raised £15,000 for Macmillan Cancer Relief, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Leukaemia, Diabetes Wales, Air Ambulance Wales, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Cancer Research, Crossroads, Latch, NSPCC, Barnardos and the RNLI. But if the charity you support doesn't appear above, then you can nominate who you would like to receive your sponsorship.

Many of the dippers traditionally don fancy dress costumes, with swim regulars always trying to out-do each other in the creativity stakes, and it is hoped that more swimmers will dress up to add a splash of colour to the event.

Chairman of the Saundersfoot Festivities Association, Mr. Martyn Williams, is again hoping to out-do last year's swim.

"We hope people will come out in their droves to support the swim again, and this year we won't have a 50-yard dash as the tide is going to be in our favour, so people will have to find a good vantage point to start from," he said.

"Each year there are medals for all the swimmers who take part, as well as individual awards for the highest sponsored swimmers and best fancy dress."

Last year saw a variety of characters, including Vikings, Choirboys, Mexicans, Hawaiian dancers and even Father Christmas himself take the plunge.

"There are lots of high spirits on the day and the most important thing is to turn up, dress up and have a good time," said Mr. Williams.

The event this year will be started by Llanelli RFC coach, Gareth Jenkins, who will also be on hand afterwards to present the swimmers with their medals, along with rugby player Johnny Thomas.

"It would be great to kick-off the New Year with another record breaking fund-raising effort in aid of people less fortunate than ourselves," remarked Mr. Williams.

"It's a lot of fun, with plenty of entertainment before and afterwards, so why not come along and join us for a good cause and make this a New Year's Day to really remember."
