Members of a South Pembrokeshire school orchestra finally returned home at the weekend from a 'memorable' trip to Spain. Greenhill School orchestra's Barcelona Tour has been hailed as their 'best ever' trip, but their journey home will also rank as one that will remembered for some years to come. One of the three buses transporting over 100 young musicians and staff home back to Tenby was impounded by gendarmes on Thursday night when it stopped after overheating, several hours into the journey. The decision was taken that younger pupils would continue the onward journey ahead of students from Years 11, 12 and 13, who were accommodated overnight in a village hall in Le Caylar in southern France while waiting for relief transport. "The students were absolutely brilliant, and we had 100 per cent co-operation from them and Silcox Coaches, whose drivers worked very hard to resolve the problems being created by the French authorities," said Greenhill's head of performing arts, Paul Rapi, who travelled on ahead of the party to Tenby to maintain telephone contact with parents. "When it became clear that there was going to be no overnight hotel accommodation for the pupils and staff on the third bus, the mayor of the village was eventually contacted and opened up the hall for them to stay the night." The group travelled to Calais on Friday afternoon in a relief French coach, where they were met by a Silcox coach. "Silcox paid for the party to travel through the Eurotunnel, instead of by ferry, which cut several hours off the journey," said Mr. Rapi. "The company was excellent in its response to the situation and oversaw everything - my argument is with the French police who I feel acted over-zealously." The first two buses arrived back at school on Friday evening, five hours behind schedule, while the third bus drove in at 9.15 am on Saturday, nearly 48 hours after the journey began. The orchestra had left Tenby on Thursday, July 19, for its Barcelona Tour. where it was based in Coma Ruga on the Costa Dorada and performed three hour-long open-air concerts at Calafells, Roda de Bara and La Pineda. Said Mr Rapi: "The tour has got to rank as one of Greenhill Orchestra's best-ever - the concerts were amazing and the whole experience was memorable, to say the least."
