CRUISER REGATTA

There were eight entries for this two-day event, two from Saundersfoot Sailing Club and six from Tenby SC - par for the course.

Most of Saundersfoot's cruiser contingent were either in the Mediterranean or off for the day to Ilfracombe, or static in the harbour.

There were three races on the Saturday; the first around DZ1 and DZ2 and the others around the Saundersfoot Club's standard dinghycourse.

Results for all three races - a clean sweep for the visitors:

1. 'Tejeda' (John Griffiths, Tenby SC); 2. 'Enigma' (Daniel Jackson, Tenby SC); 3. 'Hawk 20' (Ted Lewis, Tenby SC).

By an extraordinary coincidence, the same results applied to the Round Caldey Race on the Sunday.

Ray Smith on 'Hurlybird' (Saundersfoot SC) gave the following reason for not making a better showing: of the three crew members on board, 'Beauty' did not perform as well as expected at spinnaker handling!

CLUB DINGHY RACE

Another scorching day when most sensible people were in the water rather than trying to sail on it with much expenditure of energy.

Eighteen optimistic entrants started and continued in very light winds - from the 'off' it took the fleet over eight minutes just to cross the start line.

To the layman, this must sound like the sailor's equivalent of watching paint dry, but that takes no account of the skill needed or the frenzy induced by trying to conjure up motion when there is none to be had.

The club's standard dinghy course normally takes 20 minutes per lap for the leading boats. On this morning the winning boat did one lap in one hour 42 minutes; that is how exhilarating it was.

Results: 1. Trevor Smith (Graduate 2410); 2. Tonia Griffiths (Graduate 2966); 3. Graham Wellman (Solo 3662).

Of course, Murphy's Law applied. No sooner had racing been abandoned for the day, a decent breeze appeared.

Tomorrow (Saturday), social secretary, Gemma Rowley, is organising a 'Sounds of the Sixties' night - 7.30 pm for 8 pm. Fancy dress optional with Graham Wellman's incomparable hot dogs as an additional attraction. All are welcome.
