The sailing season at Saundersfoot Sailing Club is only now getting into its stride having been delayed by bad weather.

Readers may query the phrase 'bad weather' as they recall a period of glorious spring sunshine, but to sailors, sunshine without wind is 'bad'.

Club racing normally takes place each Sunday but, in addition, Saturday racing has been introduced this year specifically to provide an measured gentle introduction to the joys of dinghy racing for the advanced class of trainees.

Also, tomorrow (Saturday), Saundersfoot Sailing Club are hosting the Club Youth Racing Circuit on behalf of the Welsh Yachting Association.

Similar meetings will take place at other sailing clubs in the area throughout the summer and the event will be a unique opportunity to see some keen racing among young sailors in the region.

Preparations are well advanced for the main event of the Saundersfoot sailing calendar.

At the Whitsun Bank Holiday, 100 boats will converge on Saundersfoot for the traditional Coppet Week Regatta.

The event has steadily gained in popularity year after year and for the first time, Saundersfoot Sailing Club has had to limit the number of entries to 100, the maximum who can safely race in a mixed fleet within the confines of Saundersfoot Bay.

The event is uniquely popular because it attracts to the area not only a large number of competitors, but also it encourages them to bring their families.

Racing is limited to one race per day so that there is always time for competitors to spend time with their families and explore the amenities offered by Pembrokeshire at large.

Races are always run from the harbour wall, rather than several miles out to sea, so that families as well as non-sailing visitors can enjoy the spectacle of a racing fleet in full flight.

The timetable for this popular event is as follows:

Registration - Saturday May 24 from 7 pm until 10 pm; Sunday, May 25 - 10 am until 12 noon and 8 pm until 10 pm.

Race start times - Sunday, May 25 - RNLI Pennant Race 2 pm; Monday, May 26th 2 pm; Tuesday, May 27 2.30 pm; Wednesday, May 28 3 pm; Thursday May 29 3.30 pm; Friday, May 30 4 pm.
