Saundersfoot and District Historical Society went on their annual June trip to a local place of historical interest. This year saw the group visit Picton Castle.
Set in beautiful grounds, the group were shown around this fascinating building by tour guide Sue, who explained not only Picton Castle’s history, but also the family background - and why there’s a bathroom in the chapel!
There are some beautiful paintings hanging in the caste - one of which, an unsigned Renoir, has been the subject of the television programme Fake or Fortune. Sadly, to date, the painting has yet to be authenticated, so the planned sale to help raise funds for repairs to the castle will have to be delayed.
The group also saw how life was ‘below stairs’ with a fabulous collection of old household equipment - including a very early electric toaster and some old vacuum cleaners which some of the group remembered from their childhoods!
Picton Castle is a lovely place to visit - and there’s so much more to do than just see the castle. https://www.pictoncastle.co.uk
Saundersfoot and District Historical Society meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30 pm in The Regency Hall, Saundersfoot, between September and April. Everyone is welcome. It’s free for members who have paid their annual subscription (currently £12pa), and just £2 for non-members, and that includes light refreshments at the end of the meeting - a chance to socialise and chat with the speaker.
