A well overdue photograph of Saundersfoot Ladies as Pembrokeshire League 2010 champions takes centre stage in our column this week.

Due to holidays and other commitments, the girls had been unable to get together for a picture for the honours board, but began defence of their title with a photocall last week, with captain, Gemma Amos, proudly holding the shield.

Gemma has again been celebrating this week after receiving a call-up to the Welsh Under 25s squad for their Home International series in July.

Saundersfoot Ladies, this year captained by Elaine Shaw, have made a bold bid to win the league again this year, with a four-point win over Pendine and a maximum six-point win against Tenby.

Elsewhere, Saundersfoot men, captained by Simon Evans, welcomed Tenby on Saturday for the first group game in the Carruthers Shield.

Despite drawing on two rinks, skipped by Steve Dick and Simon himself, the 2009 champions ran out victorious by 40 shots.

Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to Henry Dennis, Myrddin and Berwyn's father, who was rushed to Morriston Hospital on Saturday.

On Sunday, St. Issell's travelled to Tenby for a Division Two league game, and were defeated by 12 shots, but did manage to pick up four points thanks to the rinks skipped by captain Roy Pring and John Moffat.

Good luck goes to all the lady members playing in the WWLBA trial at Pendine on Sunday.

Don't forget, club competitions close tomorrow (Saturday) and members of the management committee are reminded that their next committee meeting is on Tuesday at 6 pm.

ST BRIDES 14

TENBY GOSCAR 26

St. Brides began their Meyrick Owen Shield campaign with a home game against last year's champions last Wednesday afternoon.

The match started slowly and with a score of five shots to three in favour of Goscar after six ends, all present thought that a close game was in prospect. How wrong can you be!

A count of 14 shots to Goscar in the next five ends left the home side reeling at the tea interval as they went in 16 shots adrift.

As is often the case, the break changed the fortunes of the two sides and it was St. Brides who started strongly, closing the gap to nine shots with five ends to play.

Unfortunately, there was not to be a total turnaround, with Goscar regrouping and closing out the match with a comfortable victory.

Despite the final result, an enjoyable afternoon was had by all and St. Brides can take great heart from their performance after tea.

Rink score (St. Brides first): was as follows:

Peter Lewis, Colin Roden, Geoff Vigus and Brian McKehon (skip) 14; John Rees, Ray Hine, Jim Taylor and Harry Ebdon (skip) 26.
