On a warm sunny afternoon last Sunday, the Saundersfoot bowlers entertained their old friends Valley Dragons for their annual encounter. The Dragons, who hail from Rhondda Cynon Taff, undertake fund-raising activities for the Ty Hafan Children's Hospice and have to date raised over £30,000 The game itself was secondary to the cause, but was enjoyed by all and laughter and good natured banter abounded. At the half-time tea break, captain for the day, Lorna Bissell, presented the visitors with a cheque for £100 and in addition, a further £75 was given, being the proceeds from the fines that took place on the recent tour to Kent. The ladies of St. Issell's defeated their club colleagues from Saundersfoot by 17 shots, picking up all six league points. On rink one, Chris Haley, Kath Blayney, Beryl Lawrence and Ceris Hewlings started slowly against Angela Roberts, Alwen Hughes, Lorna Bissell and Kay Kennion and the St. Issell's rink lost the first three ends. By halfway, however, the scores were tied, but the next five ends saw St. Issell's score 15 shots without reply and this remained the difference at the end as they ran out winners by 27 shots to 12. On rink two, Lyn Statters, captain Diane Rigden, Shirley Spiller and Beryl Lewis were up against Elsie Pendlebury, Anne Davies, Viv Edwards and Marion Evans. This time it was the St. Issell's girls who flew out of the blocks, taking an 8-0 lead on four ends and at tea were leading by 11 shots. A spirited second half by the Saundersfoot ladies, however, saw that lead reduced to just one shot going into the last end, but Beryl's rink took a one and the two points by 23 shots to 21.

Saundersfoot Ladies are still chasing their elusive six points win. In their latest match against Pendine, Kay Kennion's team were scoring well until the seventh end when they dropped a four and a further five on the 10th end left them two shots adrift. They rallied and by the 18th end were three shots ahead. They then lost shots on the last three ends, finishing three down. The other rink, skipped by Marion Evans, were five- all on the fifth end, but from then on they pushed ahead, accumulating a score of 32 shots. Their previous match, against Neyland, was a closely fought game. The rink skipped by Marion Evans pulled ahead on the ninth end, and remained in that position until the end of the game, winning by six shots. The pattern of play on the other rink was similar. On the ninth end, Saundersfoot were two shots ahead, but it was the Neyland ladies who gradually pulled ahead, finishing three shots up by the end of the match. FIXTURES
On Sunday, the Pembrokeshire County men's team take on Carmarthenshire at the Saundersfoot green at 2.30 pm. Other fixtures include a mixed friendly against Stanley, Co. Durham, today (Friday) at 2 pm, Saundersfoot ladies versus Cleddau next Monday at 2 pm and St. Issell's ladies against Whitland at 6 pm, also on Monday and all at the Saundersfoot green. All next week at Saundersfoot, the semi-finals of the various men's county competitions will be taking place. There are games each week night at 6 pm.
