milford haven 56 saundersfoot 73
Saundersfoot commenced their league programme last Saturday with a visit to Milford Haven. Although having lost nearly a full squad of players over the past two seasons for a variety of reasons, the spirit of the club is good and the Seasiders ran out winners by 73 shots to 56, picking up 10 of the 14 points at stake. On rink one, Saundersfoot welcomed back Alan Brain, who has missed the past four seasons due to work commitments, but soon showed why he is still one of the best leads in the county. With Brian Deeley at number two, Roy Pring as third and Paul Blayney skip, the rink was drawing with Dave Buchanan's four at tea, but lost the last three ends to go down by three shots. On rink two, Roy Kennion made a return to Saundersfoot colours and together with Allen Brace, Gareth Hughes and John Jenkins were drawing on 19 ends, but then dropped two singles to be pipped at the post. Rink three saw skip John Dugmore, captain George Cavell, the ever-improving Joe Dennis and Gordon Thornton play steady woods throughout and gain a 10-shot victory. On rink four, Graham (Farmer) Hughes, Don Stokes, Steve Dick and Myrddyn (Popeye) Dennis were always in control and thoroughly deserved their 12- shot victory. Rink scores (Saundersfoot first, Milford skips only): Alan Brain, Brian Deeley, Roy Pring, Paul Blayney 14; Dave Buchanan 17. Roy Kennion, Allen Brace, Gareth Hughes, John Jenkins 13; Tony Ellyat 15. George Cavell, Joe Dennis, Gordon Thornton, John Dugmore 22; Roy Thomas 12. Graham Hughes, Don Stokes, Steve Dick, Myrddyn Dennis 24; Barry Howells 12. The Saundersfoot squad play two games this weekend. Tomorrow (Saturday), Pembroke Dock are the opponents for a home fixture and on Sunday the villagers travel to Pendine, both games commencing at 2 pm.
st. isselL's ladies
The ladies of St. Issell's have played their first two games of the season with mixed results. Travelling to last season's league champions Whitland, they were defeated by just a handful of shots, but last Monday at Tenby emerged victorious, gaining five of the six points at stake. Captain Diane Rigden is hoping for another win tomorrow (Saturday), when Pembroke Dock are the visitors for St. Issell's first home game of the current campaign.
st. issells v fishguard
The gentlemen of St. Issell's lost their first league game of the season, being defeated at home by a strong Fishguard team who are again expected to be strong contenders for promotion to Division One. Tomorrow (Saturday), they travel to play St. Kath's, of Milford Haven, hoping for a better result.
carruthers
Next Wednesday, May 7, Saundersfoot begin their Welsh Cup campaign with a visit to Pembroke Dock. The match commences at 6 pm. INEXCUSABLE!
The Saundersfoot men's team have, for some years now, had a system of fines for matches, with players being relieved of money for a variety of reasons, such as improper dress and bowling a wrong bias. On Saturday at Milford, however, captain George Cavell was forced to fine a certain member one pound for not only bowling someone else's wood, but also mistakenly going to the ladi' toilet! Now, although the gentleman shall be nameless (although he is a past president of the county and will shortly be going on tour to Kent which he has organised with his wife), surely he should have been fined two pounds for his inexcusable behaviour?
WELCOME BACK
Geoff Spiller, a member of the Saundersfoot squad, plays his first game of the season tomorrow. Geoff has been unwell during the winter and is wished better health by all his team-mates.
COUNTY COMPETITIONS
The county competitions are all underway, with Saundersfoot bowlers, both male and female, being well represented. Good luck to you all!
