Saundersfoot held a successful ladies open tournament over two days last week. In brilliant sunshine, featuring bowlers from all over the county, spectators were treated to some fine bowling and several nail-biting finishes to games. On Friday, the format was two-wood triples played in two groups on a round-robin basis throughout the day. The two group winners were Ann Davies, Lorna Bissell and Marion Evans and Viv Edwards, Kay Kennion and Ann Evans, all from Saundersfoot, with Ann, Lorna and Marion winning an exciting final by just one-shot. Following the final, the victorious triple were presented with their trophy by club chairman Paul Blayney. On Saturday, two singles competitions took place. In the Joan Osborne singles, Chris Haley and Gwenda Rees, of the home club, won through to the final which kept the crowd on the edge of their seats and the result being in doubt until the very last wood. Going into the last end, the scores were level and with both ladies needing one-shot, Chris eventually won the day, with Gwenda just missing the jack with her last wood. In the Joan Proctor Shield, birthday girl Kath Blayney won through to the final in another close encounter, defeating Carole Jones, of Pendine, by one-shot in the semi-final. In the final, buoyed by this success, she defeated another Pendine bowler, Pam Jones, to make it a clean sweep of trophies for the home girls. Chairman Paul Blayney again presented the trophies and thanked all those members of the club who had helped to make the event a success, including the ladies in the kitchen, the bar steward Brian Deeley, the gentlemen markers and above all, the participants for their support.

Welsh Internationals

Good luck to Ann Lewis and Ceris Hewlings who will be playing for Wales in the Home International Series in Llandrindod Wells next week. This will be the 19th year that Ann has been representing her country, while Ceris will be receiving her first senior cap. Ceris will play second in Ann's rink. Wales begin their defence of the series which they won in Ayr last year with games against Jersey and England on Tuesday. They play Scotland on Wednesday and round off the series by playing Ireland on Thursday. Well done also to John Roberts who has been selected to for the men's Home Internationals in Edinburgh at the end of the month. John will be leading for Andrew Attwood, of Caerphilly in the series. Good luck to all three of you.
