Following further heavy rainfall last week, safety concerns has seen a well-used footpath to a beach between Tenby and Saundersfoot closed to the public.

After the recent inclement weather for the area, a number of steps on the public footpath leading to Monkstone Beach have been damaged and dislodged.

“A series of cracks have also appeared in the surface of the footpath, indicating movement of the saturated ground, caused no doubt by the heavy rainfall and ground water draining downslope,” stated Access & Rights of Way Manager for Pembrokeshire County Council Anthony Richards on the weekend.

“In addition, the last four steps to the beach have been washed away, leaving a two metre high, near vertical drop to the beach.

“As the footpath has been rendered out of repair and unsafe for pedestrian use, the National Park Authority will have to make a temporary closure today to restrict public access and undertake the necessary repairs.”

Signage and barriers will be maintained at the footpath for the duration of the closure.

County councilor for the ward of St Mary Out Liberty (New Hedges) Cllr Rhys Jordan, has alerted local residents to the measures.

“Due to recent heavy rainfall, Monkstone Beach footpath has suffered significant damage, including dislodged steps and surface cracks. The final steps to the beach have also been washed away, leaving a steep drop,” he posted on social media.

“Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority will conduct repairs, and signage and barriers will be in place during this period.

“I apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as work takes place to restore safe access,” added Cllr Jordan.
