The 2011 AJO Memorial took place over the past two weekends. The first leg was held at Tenby and the second at Trefloyne. In excess of 300 cards were taken out.

The annual competition is open to all members of Tenby and Trefloyne Golf Clubs, both men and ladies. It is held in memory of Arthur J. Ormond MBE, a former managing editor of the Tenby Observer and past captain and president of Tenby Golf Club.

Both courses were in excellent overall condition. The recent rain had softened the approaches and greens at Trefloyne.

First leg - Tenby

There was one heavy shower during mid morning and the wind picked up in the afternoon. However, the scoring was fantastic.

In the men's section, no less than 20 players scored 36 points or better. Paul Hoyland and Ian Thomas were joint leaders with 40 points. A single shot behind were Mike Schooling and Jerry Whitehouse. Juan Cruz, Andrew Morton and Darren Thomas were just two adrift.

Hoyland also had the best 'gross' score with 35 points.

At the halfway stage in the ladies section', young Amber Thomas had the best round with 39 points.

Second Leg - Trefloyne

Unfortunately, some of the golfers in contention were unable to play at Trefloyne due to the likes of holiday and work commitments. These included Hoyland, Whitehouse, Terry Davies, Peter Rossi and Jeremy Morris.

There was another heavy downpour for the early starters and a strong westerly wind blew all day, making scoring tough.

Unfortunately, the likes of Thomas, Schooling, Cruz, John Stenson and Gareth Brace, plus Trefloyne's John Broomhead, faded out of contention on the parkland course.

The best score of the day was 39 points by 17-year-old Greg Palin, who beat Roger Scholfield by one point, with Matthew Evans and Jon Bolter another point behind.

The best 'gross' rounds of the day with 32 points were by Adams and Bolter.

Rosina Jenkins with 39 points was a clear winner in the ladies' section.

36-Hole Aggregates

Last year's winner of the AJO Memorial Bowl, Steffan Jones, of Trefloyne, made a creditable defence of his title with a combined total of 67 points. Bolter plus Nick Thomas and Darren Thomas all had a combined score of 69 points. Richard Morton and Graham Harrison were equal third with 71 points.

The runner up this year was eight-handicapper Andrew Morton, who followed up his fine 38 points in Tenby with a steady 35 points in Trefloyne for a total of 73 points.

However, the 2011 AJO Memorial Champion is Roger Scholfield, of Tenby Golf Club. Roger is deputy headmaster at Tenby School and played off a handicap of 17, although he will no doubt now be seriously cut after his triumph. His 36 points at Tenby left him in joint 13th place, but a wonderful 38 points at Trefloyne last Saturday gave him an aggregate of 74, one better than Morton.

The Tenby Observer Cup awarded for the best 'gross' aggregate score was won by three-handicapper Richard Morton, whose 65 points was four clear of Chris Thompson and Andy Pouton. Richard has probably been the most consistent performer in the nine years of the AJO Memorial, although this is the first time he has won the 'gross' event.

There was some confusion at the prize-giving, for which the organisers apologise to those concerned.

Thanks to her fabulous round at Trefloyne, Rosina Jenkins won the Ladies Bowl. Her total of 73 points was four better than both Jane Meyrick and Amber Thomas.

The longest drives in the men's section were claimed by Chris Thompson at Tenby and Sam Jaakola at Trefloyne, whilst big hitting Jane Meyrick won both the ladies' competitions.

Nearest the pin prizes were awarded to Andrew Cope and Bethan Morris at Tenby and Robin Bradbury and Linda Coward at Trefloyne.

At Tenby, 11 men and two ladies had twos. At Trefloyne, there were eight 2s for the men, but none for the ladies.

Competitors should check at their respective clubs whether they have won credit, vouchers or balls. As usual, credit and vouchers will be at Tenby for the first leg and Trefloyne for the second leg, but for the 36-hole aggregates, it will be at the competitors' home clubs.
