In the face of an economy that seems to be turning, just about the last problem you would want is the main access roads into your town centre being cut off. This has been the plight of Tenby's business community since Easter weekend after the devastating fire at the Royal Gatehouse Hotel. Only on the evening of Friday, May 2, at the beginning of May Bank Holiday weekend, some six weeks later, were the roads re-opened. It is with sighs of relief that the town's businesses can now concentrate on doing what they know best - business. The town's Chamber of Trade and Tourism, in conjunction with county and town councils, with other public sector organisations and assisted by Pembrokeshire Tourism, has been working on a 'phoenix' plan. A Tenby Rescue Marketing Plan: matching funds from the private and public sectors, the aim is to rekindle awareness of Tenby's position as the foremost seaside resort in Wales. A destination with something for everybody, steeped in heritage and culture. Said chamber spokesman, Chris Osborne: "How many other resorts in the world can offer four golden sandy beaches, mediæval town walls, a working fishing harbour, enough overnight accommodation to boost the local population fourfold and food and drink stops twentyfold? "And then there are the numerous other tourism and tourism-related businesses in the county who depend upon and complement Tenby's reputation. "This is why the message that 'Tenby is Open' is so critical to all of the county's economy."
