After last week's defeat at home to high fliers Swansea Uplands, the Quins bounced back with a hard fought bonus point win at lowly Pontyates on Saturday.

It didn't start too well for the visitors, who conceded a penalty virtually straight from the kick-off, which was goaled by outside-half Kieron Evans.

The Quins, however, hit back just five minutes later with an outstanding try, especially considering the conditions the game was played in. The ball went through at least 12 pairs of hands until it reached number eight Gareth Scourfield, who sent winger Paul Jonkers over in the corner. Neil Brace added the extras with a superb touchline conversion.

Kieron Evans soon reduced the arrears with another well-struck penalty.

The Quins at this stage were giving away far too many penalties, which were keeping the homesters in the game. Ponty's backs did not seem to be any threat to the Quins at all.

Paul Jonkers soon grabbed his second try after another fine move, this time being sent over by centre Sam Irwin. Neil Brace just failed with the conversion.

Leading 12-6, the Quins looked to be in the driving seat, but Ponty hit back after yet another Quins discretion with another penalty by Kieron Evans, who soon followed up with a superb drop goal to level the scores at 12-12.

On one of the rare occasions the Quins managed to get into Ponty's half, they found themselves with a five-yard lineout, which was quickly taken and Neil Brace dived over in the corner. He converted his own try with a magnificent kick from the touchline to send the Quins in 19-12 to the good at half-time.

With the wind and the driving rain on their backs, everyone thought the Quins would walk away with the second half, but this was not to be. The Ponty pack were giving the Quins eight a tough time, and it was not until Ponty conceded a penalty that the Quins were able to attack their line.

A fine line kick from outside-half Dean Lawrence forced a lineout 10 yards from Ponty's line, which resulted in a driving maul, and the Quins took full advantage which ended in prop Richard McIntyre forcing his way over for the bonus point try. Neil Brace missed the conversion.

Kieron Evans soon replied with a penalty to pull the score back to 24-15 as the Quins, with talisman number eight Gareth Scourfield off the field, having to hang on at least to deny the homesters a bonus point. They did this with few alarms, as both teams tired in the atrocious conditions.

Neil Brace added a penalty for the Quins with the last kick of the match to send them home happy, especially with their try line not being crossed.
