A town councillor has made a call for a new town crier to come forward to fill the role for Tenby.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas, whose late husband John Thomas served as Tenby’s town crier for more than 30 years, promoting the resort and and Pembrokeshire throughout the world while attending town crier events and competitions, told her colleagues that it would be great for the town if someone else could now take on the role.

Affectionately known as ‘Yobbler’, Mr. Thomas passed away in 2011, and three years previously had made an appeal for a younger person to take over from him, but in the absence of a successor, he was determined to carry on his duties.

“John did such wonderful work all over the world advertising Tenby,” Clr. Mrs. Thomas said.

“It’s been so long since we had a town crier now, it would be so nice to have one as the role carries historic values and it would be beneficial to announce things at various events and bring more colour to Tenby,” she continued.

The town clerk told members that the town council did advertise, interview and audition for the role a few years back, but councillors at the time did not feel that the applicants fitted the bill.

“We have a wonderful choir in Tenby, perhaps one of them would be interested in the role,” remarked Clr. Will Rossiter.
