Pembroke Town Councillor Melanie Phillips has labelled the condition of Main Street as “disgusting.”

Clr. Phillips made the remarks during a meeting of the council last Thursday.

She said the pavements were filthy and there was rubbish everywhere.

Clr. Phillips claimed that shopkeepers could power wash their buildings, sweep their fronts off, wash their windows down and paint their premises.

She felt that if the town was a cleaner place, then Pembroke might well attract more business.

She moved that the council write a letter to the offenders asking them to clear up their premises as soon as possible.

Deputy Mayor, Clr. Linda Asman, seconded the motion.

Clr. Jonathan Grimes mentioned that shop owners were blaming landlords or landladies for the mess.

But this was dismissed by Clr. Phillips, who said landlord or landladies weren’t responsible for cleaning the windows of the shops.

Clr. Dennis Evans suggested that a letter be sent to everyone about the issue, which was backed by the town council.
