The leader, Iris Taylor, welcomed everyone to the February meeting, along with guest speaker Sue Baldwin.
The meeting opened with a service led by Diana Lunn.
Sue Baldwin then entertained members with a very informative talk on the history of sea bathing in Tenby. This was accompanied with many historical facts about the development of Tenby as a seaside resort and how it became very fashionable at the end of the 18th century when it was believed that sea bathing was good for your health.
At this time, European travel was out of the question because of wars in Europe, and the great and rich had to spend their holidays in Britain. Only the rich could access Tenby, as they had to come by sea. There were not many suitable places for them to stay until the Georgian houses were built. With the coming of the railway in Victorian times, more people were able to come to Tenby.
Sue described the various methods of sea bathing, from Georgian times to the present century, and how the variety of bathing costumes developed.
This proved to be a very entertaining and informative talk and was greatly appreciated by all. Thank you Sue
To conclude the afternoon, Maggie Haggar provided a lovely tea.
The speaker at the next meeting will be Rev. Ken Sharp, who will deliver a Lenten Talk.
