Councillors in Penally have expressed their concerns over a licensing application submitted at the site of a former nightclub in the area.
An application for the ‘Queen of Clubs Penally’ came before members of the Community Council at their meeting this month for discussion.
The Council established the proposed site as the old Chequers nightclub, as the information forwarded by the Pembrokeshire County Council’ licensing department only provided a postcode.
The application is to serve alcohol until the hours of 4 am - Friday, Saturday and Sundays and 4.30 am on Bank Holidays.
Following discussion councillors expressed the following view that there was strong evidence of historic problems when this site was previously used as a night club.
These problems included alcohol related increase in noise levels.
Members pointed to the fact that there is a family-run holiday caravan site on land abutting the application site which will potentially be affected by the possible increase in noise levels from persons leaving the venue and music being played.
Historically, and to the best of councillors recollection, it was raised that the local police were involved in a number of alcohol related incidents from the former nightclub at this location.
They stated that as Tenby Police Station was not manned after 10 pm, the area was covered by officers from surrounding stations such as Pembroke Dock and Milford Haven - increasing response times considerably.
Historically, and to the best of Councillors recollection, there were also alcohol related incidents on the local trains serving Penally train station regarding persons attending the then existing night club.
The Council requested the Clerk to forward their concerns to Pembrokeshire County Council’s licensing department.
