Pembrokeshire's School Milk Initiative has held a competition to promote school milk in the county's primary schools.

Free school milk is available to all pupils up to the age seven and a subsidised charged milk scheme is available for pupils aged seven to 11 years and there has been an overwhelming support for the school milk scheme.

Pembrokeshire County Council, together with representatives from the local farming industry, the School Milk Research Council, Pembrokeshire Business Initiative, the Welsh Development Agency, and the Pembrokeshire Local Health Group Health Promotion Service have been working since 1999 on the school milk initiative.

The group was brought together as part of the Pembrokeshire Health Promoting Schools Scheme and local interest in bringing school milk back to schools.

Pembrokeshire Health promotion officer, Lynne Perry, said: "The success of the scheme has been the result of the hard work of the School Milk Group and the schools involved."

The school milk competition was designed to thank all schools for participating in the school milk scheme.

The competition had two parts, the 'Mighty Milk' competition for pupils aged four to seven and the 'Wonderful Ways with Milk' competition for those aged seven to 11.

Pupils aged four to seven had to design a poster that showed 'Why milk is good for me' and the pupils aged seven to 11 had to create a menu for the day showing interesting and innovative ways to use milk in the diet.

The winners and their prizes were:

Mighty Milk competition (four to seven years): 1. Wolfscastle CP School (family ticket day out at Folly Farm); 2. Johnston CP School (family ticket day out at Heron's Brook); 3. St. Teilo's RC School (family ticket day out at Manor Park).

Wonderful Ways with Milk competition (seven to 11 years): 1. Wolfscastle CP School (family ticket day out at Oakwood); 2. Milford Haven Junior School (a family day out at Manor Park); 3. Wolfscastle CP School (family ticket day out at Heron's Brook).

The three winning schools will each receive prizes - adventure activity packs, giant teeth set, tooth brushes and foam tooth model packs - to the value of £64.
