Local wildlife worker, Maria Evans, of Tinkers Hill, Amroth, is busy caring for a colony of swans rescued after a kerosene leakage near the Milford Haven Waterway. The incident at Petroplus three weeks ago saw 500 gallons of kerosene seeping from a storage tank into a stream at Llandstadwell and led to the rescue of 15 swans who live at Hazelbeach. Maria, together with Terry Leadbetter, of Welsh Marine Life Rescue, spent three days the weekend before last rounding up the birds to check their condition and found they all needed attention. "The swans are all showing signs of burning to their tongues and roof of their mouths," explained Maria. "They have been seen by the vet and blood samples taken. It is just going to be a question of time to get the swans waterproof and back to full health," added Maria, who has been given an initial £300 donation by Petroplus to help with costs. The company will also be making a further donation, as well as giving £300 to the Welsh Marine Life Rescue in recognition of their help. Petroplus will also be paying the cost of a veterinary inspection and will be buying some special fencing to enable Maria to make a new pen for Tinkers Hill.
