A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Valerie Jenkins (née Wimmers), aged 82, took place on Friday, December 9, at St. Nicholas Church, Penally, followed by interment at Tenby New Cemetery.

She passed away peacefully at home on November 26 after a long battle with cancer.

Valerie was born in 1934 in Swansea, the second child of the late Charles and Bessie Wimmers. She married Lynn Jenkins in 1956 and moved to Porthcawl, where daughters Rosemary and Elaine were born. A few years later they moved to Caerphilly, where their third daughter Carolyn was born.

In 1967, the family moved to Aberaeron, where many happy hours were spent out to sea in Cardigan Bay in their boat, fishing for mackerel. In 1979, Lynn accepted the post of manager at the NatWest Bank in Llanidloes, where they lived until Lynn retired.

In 1985, they moved to Penally, where Valerie enjoyed walking along the beach, going to church, and local activities such as Mothers’ Union. She particularly loved gardening and could get any plant to grow from a cutting. The orchids on her windowsills were admired by all who visited, and she delighted in sharing her knowledge and tips with them. She also enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, cryptic crosswords, knitting and cross stitch.

Valerie will be remembered for her kind, generous and helpful nature. She was blessed with six granddaughters: Melanie, Tamsyn, Emma, Charlotte, Catrin and Rhian, all of whom brought her joy and happiness; she was very proud of them.

Valerie was predeceased by her husband Lynn in 1994, sister Patricia in 1984 and brother Laurence in 2014.

The family would like to thank the Paul Sartori nurses, Macmillan, District Nurses, Care in Hand, Withybush Hospital and Tenby Doctors for their care and support during Valerie’s illness. Special thanks go to Rev. Robb Wainwright, of St. Nicholas Church, Penally, for his regular visits and support which were so much appreciated by Valerie and the family.

The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Robb Wainwright and included hymns chosen by Valerie: Thine be the Glory; There is a Redeemer; and Shine, Jesus, Shine.
