FOR the first club walk of the month, 32 Steps2Health members gathered in Narberth for a different kind of town walk.

Kym and Jane led the Speedies down Carding Mill Lane at a great pace. It was a nice early autumn day, just made for social walking. Barbara, backed by Chris, led the Steadies the other way, up Northfield Road. They soon turned off at Bloomfield Centre and followed the path around the hallowed turf of Narberth Rugby Club. Then on they went around the lesser known by-ways of Narberth.

Eventually they arrived at The Hwb, where Barbara ended the walk, as the first of the very warm Speedies came into sight, having been all the way to the bottom of Carding Mill Lane and back.

The following Saturday, the town was crammed with visitors ready for Ironman Wales. Steps2Health enjoyed a walk to Giltar Head and back and managed to avoid almost all the visitors, simply by staying out of the town.

On Saturday 19 it dawned a proper Pembrokeshire autumn day. The sunshine was liquid and coming sideways! Nonetheless, 17 steadfast members turned out at West Angle Bay for a circuit of the headland.

Miraculously, as they gathered outside the cafe, the rain stopped and the sun came out. The urge to forget the walk and dive into the café went away and the walkers were off. The larger Speedies group headed towards the village for a full circuit of the headland, while the bijou Steadies group set off on the Coast Path past Thorne Fort.

Very quickly, people warmed up and ended up carrying all their rain gear rather than wearing it. At the end, they did all pile into the café and enjoyed the usual delicious cakes and snacks on offer. So all ended well, despite a shaky start to the Angle trip.

For the last walk of September, it was sunny but windy. Everyone gathered at Penally station car park, most travelling by bus. The Speedies charged up Giltar Head and around the headland, before setting off towards the town.

The Steadies took the direct path to the South Beach turning left and heading straight across the sands. They managed to stay ahead of the Speedies until Castle Hill, which the Steadies avoided and formed a queue outside the Harbour Kiosk.

Steps2Health is an entry level walking club, walking for up to an hour, every Saturday, year round. Visit www.steps2health.org.uk or phone 07967 056466 to find out more.
